I’m looking at adding a SIM card to my iNet box, as there have been a couple of occasions when it would have been nice to come back to a warm van. Ideally it would be a pay as you go type that you top up when and if you run out of credit, rather than some kind of monthly contract. Does anyone have good experiences with a provider that they can recommend. I’ve come across ASDA Mobile that seems to allow the credit to remain on the card for 180 days before expiring and texts are free and unlimited so potentially costing £5 every 6 months, but perhaps others know better?

I use Vodafone PAYGO sims in things like trackers, spare phones. Just get the standard PAYGO tariff and it doesn't expire, just one chargeable call/text every three months and they go on for ever.

Avoid getting any special offers, they do expire. and they will try to sell you those.

I use a giffgaff but your Asda plan sounds good. Yes its great to be able to control heating and water from app on your phone. It will even send you a message telling you when you've ran out of gas or the temp drops etc. I love it.

Asda uses the EE network and GiffGaff the O2 network in case network coverage is an issue. We had to ditch Asda SIMs as we were in an EE notspot (even though most people report better coverage with EE).

Both sound good choices.

We have used GiffGaff ones in trackers, etc. The credit stays there as long as the device is not unused for 6 months.

I use GiffGaff pay-as-you-go for both the iNet box and my tracker. Not regretted the choice one bit.

I used Tesco's sim card. Cheap and cheerful, and lets face it there's not going to be big bills on it!

The iNet box is also useful for checking leisure battery status. You can also tell if the solar panel is charging. Brilliant if its left in storage.

You want a machine to machine SIM.

GlobalM2MSim as above. Credit never expires as long as you make one network connection at least every 12 months. Roaming network SIM so always finds the strongest signal, 8p per text.

I use one in my home alarm communicator.

Likewise.

It has the advantage of not being tied to a network and so searches and connects to wherever it can, they have an agreement with. Use it in my motorhome and bike trackers as well. It’s, I believe, just 2G and can be set to autotopup.

Thank you for your replies. The Asda SIM has arrived, but needs to be activated in a phone. I’ve got an old iPhone that I can use for this, but if it doesn’t work, I’ll get one of the M2M cards.

not sure if you are aware but the new iOS 13.2.2 for iphones does not work on bluetooth to the iNet Box. It will still work with text, i use a giffgaff sim in mine but currently i cannot use bluetooth until either apple of truma sort out their bluetooth issues.

Hi Garratt, as Zac says the latest ios from apple was to have resolved this problem, however, mine is very erratic connecting via bluetooth, This causes the app to switch to SMS mode as you probably know. If I want b/tooth to work in the van I have to re-establish the connection and it will be fine for a few days. I have learned to live with it as I really like the inet box and app.

I have currently so far tested on iOS 13 / 13.1.3 / 13.2.2 and all connect once then switch to sms mode. Not just me so if yours is working don’t upgrade it as your May lose it. Been in contact work truma support and they have acknowledged it saying it will be sorted before Xmas but I’m not holding my breath as today news article is blaming Apple. Although I have no issues with any of my other 7 Bluetooth devices on my iPhone 11 Pro. Still it does still operate on sms so not all is lost.

We use an ASDA sim and it is fine, set up auto top up so it tops up when the amount goes below a certain amount (£2 from memory). Handy to check battery levels, temperature etc. every now and again when in storage and as you say warm up the van on a cold day.

I received M2M Sim card but I cannot get it to work. They tell me to try and check the APN settings of the device but how does an ordinary person do that?

You don't need APN as it only sends text messages. You need to connect with Bluetooth to configure it, there is a set up wizard if I remember correctly just follow that. Its all in the manual and online help.

Can work it fine with a Vodafone SIM but it's 13euro a month. I said I'd try m2m at 3euro a month. I swapped out but m2m is proving difficult to activate. Their online support said to configure apn to 3iot.com but how do i do that. It worked perfectly on Vodafone

Put it in your phone to activate it.

Is your phone unlocked to other SIM cards?
You will have to do it in your mobile data network settings, easiest thing for you to do is pop along to a phone shop and get them to do it for you.

It's activated ok, I can send texts etc i think m2m is a roaming SIM from 3 and will not jump to Vodafone which has a stronger signal where I'm parked. That's why apn must be checked they say.

It won't work with a 3g sim, you need a sim that works on the 2g network. Sounds as though you are using a 3g sim if affiliated with 3 network.

Mystery solved here is M2M technical support reply. as Batman would say....Drat!

d Neal (Global M2M SIM Support)

What country is your sim in?
The sim will work on all 2G, 3G and 4G networks everywhere except Southern Ireland where it will only use Three Ireland which is only a 3G network.
If your device is only 2G themn this will be the problem and will prevent it working on any 3 or 4G networks anywhere.

New to van life
As I understand it the iNet box can only use a 2G network.

Truma have acknowledged this on their website See here

It seems the 2G network is about to be switched off in the UK see here Ofcom and is already switched off in some countries.

I tried the new iNetX box - it had a nice looking touch screen and Bluetooth (which only works inside the van - so is pointless) - unfortunately it has no SIM card or other form of internet access so it can not be controlled remotely from the van. It was a big waste of money!

It seems strange that Truma have just left their customers with no way forward with the demise of 2G.
