Plan was the Romantic Road, leaving Samoens in the alps @ 7th June but we now have a finite time, due to agreeing to meet NZ friends in Paris on 24th June.
It'll take 2 days to get to the southern end, and another 2 days to Paris from the northern.
Would we be rushing it?

Alternative is to potter down the Rhine.

Personally I hate the Rhine valley! Train lines on both banks ensure disturbed sleeping and the river is too wide for any bridges to cross back and forth but there are ferries. Romantic Road for me even with less time to stop!

The argument for the Rhine is starting at Basel and going through lovely towns such as Freiberg Colmar Strasbourg and hitting the smaller ones nearby such as Eguisheim, Baden Baden, then still having the choice of Karlsruhe Saarsberrg Luxembourg or doing the Vogues with the route des cretes.
The Romantic Road, in our opinion, is a fantastic piece of marketing to entice people to use that road which has some nice villages and castles with good starting and finishing points and a couple of really nice towns in between.
We would definitely do the Rhine

When we went down the Rhine we also found that everyone else wanted to stop at the nice bits, the wineries etc so parking was a problem and the nice places get very busy with river cruise ships offloading for the day.

But I’ve been there and done it and certainly would not do it again.

You pay your money and take your choice!

Haven't done the Rhine but the Romantic Strasse was amazing. There are a couple of towns that I would miss out though.

There's a lot more German holiday routes (Deutsche Ferienstrasse) than you might think, maybe try to combine a few others into your itinerary...
