I'm sacking BT as my broadband provider.

We have Fibre-to-Cabinet with about 50meg. Who do you reccomend as my new broadband provider?

We’re with Plusnet who are owned by BT, in the 4 years we’ve been with them they’ve been excellent when called. When we moved house all done with no issues, we also had a faulty hub which they replaced and gave us a credit for the inconvenience.

Another vote on Plusnet.
Had it as fibre since 2015 and recently gone full fibre. Connection been good, only ever had to call them to haggle on prices and do service changes.

I have just renewed with EE AKA BT after ringing them with a quote from Martin's money savings site for a company I had not heard of before. They actually almost matched it and I have saved almost 50% of the monthly fee across that and the mobile. They have also sent a new router and mesh wifi that is supposed to be much better than the existing units. Time will tell. The real advantage for me is less messing about with email addresses etc.

I have just sacked Virgin and gone with Three broadband on a unlimited data card, we are in a 5g area so good speed, just done 3 tests, 130, 185 and 176 Mb/s, £11 for the first 6 months and then 22 for the rest of the 24 month contract.

Screenshot 2024-04-19 at 17.19.29.png

I have seen as much as 250Mb/s

I would like 3G let alone 5G. We sometimes get 1 bar hanging out of an upstairs window, or walking to the top of the garden. If that doesn't work, have to walk down the road, round the village hall and then a climb to the top of the hill. 😥

Yes that's why I clarified that we are in a good area for 5g, working a treat so far and the Humax Aura freeview box replaces Virgin TV so we are quids in.

+2.
Had it 12 years now with no problems, great prices, and I get 70-80 mbps. Fast enough for me!

We have just left BT for EE - owned by BT - £28.99 for 70 mb instead of sticking with BT who were going to charge Just shy of £ 38 with price rise- we used to get £5 discount on both mobile’s with EE because we were BT customers - Now we get both mobiles for £10 each unlimited text, calls and DATA 👍with no rise in price until next April- Same deal from Plusnet was £ 26.99 but no mobile deal.

I'm on Plusnet on an ADSL/VDSL connection. My UniFi gear continuously checks the connection. Outages are extremely rare and the majority of the time, I don't notice. Most of the time, it's a couple of seconds. I've been working from home since the pandemic, so I need a solid connection. Yes, faster would be nice (69 down/19 up). But reliable is critical.

I can get 1gig from Virgin Media. But the local WhatsApp is "is virgin down again?" and lots of conformations every other week. No thanks.

I'll get fibre to the home, when it becomes available in my area.

I get fttp with 150 Mbps download with BT. It is 100% reliable. My neighbour gets 900mbps download with BT. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.

BT are moving all non business customers over to EE over the next year. EE are a lot cheaper than BT 😉

Plusnet, fibre to the cabinet, up to circa 67mbps (reliably over 60mbps), has proven to be reliable so just renewed 18 month contract at £25.99 per month. Where we are situated there aren’t currently many options, but new players appear to be coming in the near future…

I’m with BT. Full fibre to the house. 900mb download and 110mb upload. Get a download speed exceeding that on a wired computer and about 250mb on iPad or iPhone on WiFi when downstairs (router is upstairs). I work from home so reliable connection is essential. It’s fast and expensive, and has been bomb proof over the last 2 years. Work pays a bit towards it to soften the blow.

I know this isn't for everyone but when we left bt about 5 years ago we went with sky and now get everything through it, phone, broadband as well as TV, and it works fine. I don't know what it costs as my son pays for it, but performance wise I can't knock it.

I'm a little surprised with how many people bother with massively fast connections. A Teams call only needs about 5mbps. UHD 4k streaming is less than 50mbps. The only time I'd like a quicker connection is when I'm pulling 100GB datasets for work, or when the latest AAA game patch drops.

Don’t need the speed for leisure purposes but I frequently download several gigabytes of video files and also upload a couple of gigabytes of photographs to the office servers, and download speed is really nice for that. I went for the fastest full fibre when a slower version would have done because the price difference with BT was about £3 a month as I remember… a no brainier for me as work pays towards it.

They've just installed fibre to all the telephone poles in our village. My neighbour has signed up to Sky for an "all singing" package and got me to wait in for them. The bloke turned up and it seems Sky have subbed the connection job out to BT Openreach !

Openreach do the vast majority of network connects. It's a completely different part of BT but of course owns and operates all the exchanges and cabinets. Other ISP's are allowed to install their own equipment for their customers but Openreach make all the connections,

Binned BT at the end of January due to diabolical service and no chance of fibre from them until December 2026 even though the roads surrounding us have it!

Signed up with Airband for a super duper 900mb package and ….. waiting for them to get authority to use the power pole outside - which is on our property. Currently using the Teltonika router in the van parked outside with a 100gb IQ GO data SIM.

Just be aware that EE are advertising a 10% increase on broadband contracts from next April.
£29.99 a month then a £3 increase from next April.

As you are ftc you can use any of the companies offering you ftc as they use the openreach Fiber network. Same as Bt sky talk talk EE. That all use the open reach Fiber network. You just change router when they tell you. They even cancel your Bt account so it’s an automatic switch over apart from router.
