not long enough
We always keep tinned chilli, for those days when there is nothing left in the fridge

It would appear we have had plenty in the fridge for a while 🤔🙄😁

If it's tinned, it will be fine for at least another decade or two.

We were given thousands of MRE's (British Army: Meals Ready to Eat) in the 2010's.
The food had been packed in 1973 and had a use by date of 1997, but was still perfectly edible 15 years after the 'eat by' date.

It took an entire Scout Group over 3 years to eat them all.
(Food that would have been packed before many of their parents were even born!)

In the 1980's my mother attended a banquet were they were severed oxtail soup as a starter.

It was in big catering tins and had gone down to Antarctica with Scott in 1907 and had been bought back by the British Antarctica Survey for the dinner.
(After the main meal it was followed by 1907 brandy and cigars, the brandy was fine, but the cigars had not lasted nearly as well, smelt like a garden bonfire apparently !)

Most tinned food I've ever tasted, especially meat, is produced cheaply and is of a very low quality. Taste is secondary and because of its high temperature cooking method it is well overcooked. Dog food is my overall impression. Not that I've ever tasted that. I know many people have their favourites, but I would welcome suggestions regarding anything remotely edible for our travel lockers. Mind you, can't promise I'll ever get around to tasting it, like most everything else in that locker, which has already travelled many thousands of miles. Last tin used was a quite pleasant Tesco chicken curry! Can't imagine its sell by date!

best before dates.
'best before' and 'use by' are not the same..

I wouldn't eat anything with an expired 'use by date', be it a can or packet.

pasta, for example, has a 'use by' date because it contains egg ..

food poisoning is no laughing matter .. it could ruin a holiday ..
why I never eat salad or cold meats in a restaurant or food from a 'help yourself cold buffet bar " I've seen people handle stuff with their hands then put it back, yuk

There are an estimated 2.4 million cases who suffer from an FBD ( food borne disease ) in the UK; approximately 16,300 receive hospital treatment with over 180reported deaths.

It's your choice.. better safe than ill.. food is relative cheap.. just chuck it

Always carry a packet of Flahavan's Irish Organic Porridge from Tesco's. ( like solid Guinness! 😆)

Can be used in so many ways, morning, noon & night!
(Sorry, it's not tinned!😄 )
