Ive had Photoshop Elements 15 for a while and it was quite happy importing Cannon Raw but have a new Sony RX10 IV and Elements wont import ARW files directly and wants to go via a translation program. For 128k of files this is a pain let alone yet more drive space. Is there a later version of elements that will do it. I AM NOT interested in subscription based solutions. Is Gimp suitable for this?

Not sure what you want to do with the files but Irfanview (free) can read Sony ARW files.

Irfanview has great a great batch conversion options, looks like you can batch convert from ARW to RAW (or anything else) quite easily, I've only used it to batch rename/resize and that worked well.

You might need to install a new Raw plug in to your version of Elements...

see this link
https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html

thanks exactly what i wanted to do but this does not go back to elements 15 it points directly to converting to Adobe digital converter another format. same as irfanview a batch processing option that i was hoping to avoid. What i was hoping for is a later version that directly imports ARW, if known. AdobeCameraRaw 16 says its has the Sony ARW update but doesnt importto my version
update
after more searching even Elements 2024 is restricted to update 15.5
so what im after isnt available

Best solution is to batch-convert your proprietary Sony RAW files to non-proprietary DNG files.

As well as being open-standard and backwards compatible, they compress into smaller file sizes saving disc space whilst still being lossless.

Adobe have their own DNG batch-convertor that should enable your files to work with older versions of Elements.

I gave up with elements 15. I couldn't get it to give me a smooth flow, and sometimes any flow. I went to Creative which has become Luminar. Never had any trouble with the software but the way the firm acts leaves me frustrated.

I don't want all the fancy toys in the software. I want software that is stable, easy to use, and suitable for hobbyist. And better than Apple Photos.

Not used Luminar But would reccomend Gimp if you need a capable product (open source)

Just come to that conclusion thank you.

Twelve months and still learning.
Depending on what you do with your photographs, an alternative solution is to set your camera to record in jpg format. Elements will import the files without conversion and will be quicker.

You will lose some flexibility in post processing but unless you intend to make enormous prints or use the shots for printed media e.g. magazines, then no problem.

Currently save in both, the jpegs are only 7Meg but good enough to sort out wheat from chaff when shooting at 24fps
This thread may be of interest.

Yes it is. No mention of DNG files. currently other box has just converted 10000 images.

Barti Ddu did a test initialy arw file 20Meg DNG 23Meg.

I'm surprised that the DNG file is larger, although I've never owned a Sony so not sure about the native Sony file types. In theory DNG files should be smaller.

Whenever I've imported various raw files into Adobe Lightroom, I've always selected "Convert to DNG on import", mainly to ensure "futureproofabilty" of some pretty obscure file types (Samsung SRW for example) but also because it invariably reduces the file size by typically 10 to 20%.

Depending on the number of photos, I'll wander off for 20 minutes to make a coffee while it converts and imports them all.

I'm using "proper" cameras less and less these days, relying more on my mobile phone. My current Pixel7 android phone uses DNG to save RAW files instead of / as well as JPEGs, cutting out the need to convert.

Having installed raw therapee and imported to Gimp i can now import Sony files directly into Gimp at least. But no sucess with DNG into Gimp so far . importing DNG into elements and playing with sons wedding photos is there a quick jpg viewr for win10 the old viewer not available in my version. using the jpeg viewer on Linux box then opening DNG on win10 elements, whilst installing gimp on win11 box (Motorhome pc)
