I know we have often discussed motorhome/campervan youtubers. Many of you will be familiar with Tread the Globe who have recently returned from nearly 5 year jaunt around the world.

They are just planning to go to New Zealand but have just heard that they may need a work visa as New Zealand may class youtubers as working. They are not taking their van but intended hiring one when they arrive.

Interesting thought - when does filming your travels for fun become a job. Wonder what they did for tax too whilst travelling the world??

Making content for YouTube is a job and a half. Okay, its not like being on the end of a shovel all day, but it's hard work nonetheless.

A person's taxes are a private affair between them and the tax man. That said, making money from any of the large socials is only possible after filling in several tax related declarations, the authorities get to know about every cent earned in this way. So your wondering in vain.

If you are making money from your actions that must be considered work ?

Well it is a job and the main reason many of them do it. Couldn't be arsed with all that filming and editing myself but they make a good living if they've a good following. People love to watch fiction 🙄

In my mind its a job when they have no other income and the money they get from the tube supports their life style.
I have been un following alot of channels as getting bored with the same old Shite.
I think lots of van lifers and narrowboat lifers are getting desperate.

So generally people agree that it's a job. However, Tread the Globe travelled the world earning money on a tourist visa??? Only New Zealand seem to be questioning this.

Another example -

True Blue Travellers - just about to set of to Canada in their converted Sainsburys van. I wonder if they have a work visa?
There are many other examples. I wonder how many, like Tread the Globe, have never even thought about it?

It's the same if you work remotely whilst on holiday. Technically that requires a working visa. My daughter is cabin crew, and needs a working visa for USA. Any type of work=work

My YouTube videos are a labour of love, I think. The latest one of our six week tour down through France to Andalusia and back starts HERE

I do imagine they are - apart from feeling my presentation skill would be lacking I wouldn't want to spoil my travels with the chore of filming. I find taking photos pain enough.

Plenty of people make a very good living out of them though. I watch a few (not motorhomers specifically) who clearly are doing very nicely. 1/2 million pound catamarans and car fleets worth collections are a couple of examples. - and these are normal people that have come from nothing - not celebs.

Tread T G also have a website that you have to pay to view content not shown on YT , so would seem to be definitely a commercial enterprise ?
Wonder if they declare earnings to taxman ,they want cash for coffee ,T shirts you name it they sell it. Also rented there house out and on return had welcome home party and yes they charged !

Just watched part 1 & 2, brought back memories of our own from April - July this year:

Bourgas👍 Cacares👍 Gelves👍
Cordoba👍 which we loved but was waaaaay to hot to do much ( mid-May) 28 degrees during the night and no A/C (we want to visit again but earlier)!
Alhambra👍 We mistakenly booked the Alhambra car park on line for two nights at a discount. Turned up and had to enter car park 3 and move the metal barrier in the corner (shown in your video) to access car park 4. Had to leave the same way as the barrier in 4 would not lift for us, with furtive glances all round for officialdom!
