Still getting there.
I'm sailing from Portsmouth to Santander on the 12th November.
I fancy making my way to Alicante via the South West side of Madrid. Stopping 4-5 nights on the way.
Is anyone familiar with that route - avoiding Madrid itself - is the M50 road OK?
Any really nice stopovers on that route? I fancy a stop at Segovia. But I know nothing of anywhere else in Spain outside of the East coast road.

I know there are many other posts about routes through Spain on here but it's a bit of a trawl to find recommendations.

Medinacelli, Segovia, Consuguara all nice. M50 is fine done it couple of times now.

I’ve been in Spain for a month and have to say it’s an absolute pleasure to drive over here. No busy roads, no horn blaring unless justified and no one cutting you up.
I had passed Madrid before I was aware, probably dropped my speed to mid 50’s to adjust to the bit of extra traffic

+ 1 for Toledo, though depending on time you get there, you may need another day - lots to explore and worth getting the tourist train to get some great views from the other side of the river.

I’d very much agree in general - but the traffic/driving going round Madrid (on the the M40, not M50) about a month back was horrendous, lane discipline was poor from some drivers.

Aranjuez is quite attractive in a stately way, and the campsite (Internacional) is ok and accepts ACSI.

Do I or do I not need a visa or Etias for Spain - November 2024?
Tried googling but it's as clear as mud.

West of Madrid is a joy for driving. Generally excellent roads, quieter than we are used to. Camper contact should locate good stopovers wherever you want to be but try to arrive about 4pm if you want best spots to park. Avoid Caceres town park as noisy with dustmen in night.

Camping Caceres is good and it’s ACSI😊👍

This is the route I hope to take. Any suggestions of 4 or 5 overnight stops within striking distance of the route would be welcome.

If you like history then Merida is a must! There is an aire next to the museum. Other places were Salamanca, Avila, Segovia, Toledo. Although we didn’t manage it this trip we are going to see The Valley of the Fallen.

Try the Area (Aire) @ Villamuriel just to the South of Valladolid.

11 places with lekky (free) for 8 of them. There is plenty of space opposite the places to park up without the juice.

It's on the edge of town which is a few mins. walk away that has bars, cafes, restaurants and a pharmacy.
Its on S4S.
