we just changed our van to a Pilote V633M. The sales guy told us that it is only a paper work exercise to up plate it, as it is already able to take the extra load without modification. That kinda suits me as we are always on the limit weight wise. As I have a C1 Licence thats not a problem to me either.

However my son occasionally borrows the van, but doesn’t have a C1. He is a bus driver and has a D licence.

My question is this: if we decide to up plate the van, and as long as the van is not weighing in at over 3,500 kg we he is using it. Can he still legally drive the van on his current licence? Or does the up plating regardless of the weight, require a C1 licence to drive?

I appreciate any advice on this or being pointed in the right direction.

Many thanks John.

That seems absurd, even though he drives a three axle double decker bus.

But thanks for the quick replies

You can drive a 7.5 tonneau lorry if not for hire or reward with a cat d licence so I'm going to say he can drive a motorhome upto 7.5 tonne aswel

Think you may well be right here ...as long as he renews the pvc bit...it's on my current licence but as I've never done the medical and renewal I guess the pvc bit although printed on the licence no longer applies ....more British and stupid !

Same as our daughter. She drives a huge double decker bus full of school children. It has been said that women can't reverse or park but you should see her park that bus..... Martin has been known to get out of the car driver's seat and tell her to park the car. During her car test she thought the examiner meant her to reverse park in a single space which she did. Later on he said he had meant the bigger space further on but it wasn't an issue as she had completed the manoeuvre and he doubted if he could have parked in the space as quickly or as neatly.

After she passed her PSV test she asked about driving a motorhome and was told she would need a C1 but might as well go for the full C if that is what she intended to do. So far she has resisted and we have sold the motorhome. Martin gave up his C1 when he turned 70 so if we ever replace the van it will be sub-3500kg anyway.

If she is spending on the licence she may as well go for the C+E
