Over the years we have used the Woolwich ferry, it’s feels like going abroad 😎. Just tried a crossing North to South pier, then South to North pier.
Both times refused to take the van over, reason, because it’s a brand new rule prohibiting gas tanks on vehicles. We can go through the Chunnel we can go on ferries but not the Woolwich ferry. Oh well, it’s the miserable Blackwall tunnel from now.

But Blackwall Tunnel is going to have toll charges soon :( Woolwich Ferry was great in the 1980s when I was at Polytechnic in the town and back before they'd done up a lot of Docklands.

As a geeky teenager in the early ´60s I lived in Blackheath and used to go across on the ferries to look at the engine gear through the viewing windows. We thought nothing of walking miles back then. I expect the vessels have long-since changed and become boring.

When I was quite young, say mid ‘50s, I walked through the original Blackwall Tunnel with my father. That is the bore with dog leg bends designed to stop horses bolting!
