Morning all,

We are thinking on going over to Spain through France to get a bit of winter sun hopefully for a couple of weeks or so next week, but not too sure if you need winter tyres or snow socks for travelling through France, i have looked at the French map and will try to stay away from the mountain areas where possible, do you need them for all France or not? we are thinking of going west from Calais and travelling down by Bordeaux to southern France to get to Spain. Any advise would be really helpfull.

Thanks

We're looking at the same for the 4 weeks before Xmas. Spending most if it in Spain. The crossing into Spain on the Med side can catch snow.

I've got four season tyres with the 3 peaks and the snowflake marking, so I think I'm covered? I think you need to carry chains if you don't. And snow socks are good. But it's not clear whether they are legal as far as I can tell. Probably a situation where the police would ignore it, but your insurance company wouldn't.

We too have gone "All Season" with the 3PMSF markings, indicating legal winter use in European countries.

We tend to travel Jan - March/April, but go down tonka's Western Route to try and avoid snow and ice, (available in Resources), and come back his Eastern Route as the weather warms up. We are non toll travellers, but if using the Peage, they do tend to remain clear. The French & Spanish are very good at keeping their main routes open during the snow season.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Not being to sure of my tires so have looked and they appear to be winter tires, better suited for mud and snow so it says on the Michelin website, we will be sticking to the main routes so hopefully should be ok on the way down to Spain, (fingers crossed).

If they are the camping tyres with M&S marking they don't count they need the 3 peaks symbol.
Just carry some snow chains as insurance.

We have winter tyres and snow chains, never needed them but gives peace of mind.
