Hi all looking forward to winter trip to southern Spain.

I was hoping for a bit more info but thanks

Have you searched? There are loads of threads. If you go into resources, look for Tonkas western route you will find it!

It’s basically Calais, Rouen, Everaux, Chartres, Tours, Bordeaux, Irun, Pamplona, Zaragoza, Turrel, then you go the obvious direction based on your destination! 😇

Thanks

Well I wouldn t do that once in Spain! We go down to Tarifa now and then in November- so past Cadiz.
We go A63 into Spain AP8 and 1 down to Victoria Gasteiz and on to Burgos ( where we’ve had snow once or twice but the roads are cleared very quickly)
A62 to Salamanca and then the A66
And the A4 from Seville

Yep, I agree, I missed the Cadiz part in the OP post!

I’m just off the A66 as I type and the bit south of Salamanca has some decent altitude to it, so need to keep an eye on weather.

I know YOU want more info.

We do too.

Where is YOUR start point, Sur la Continent, ( As said by Kenneth Williams, "That's your actual french, you know")

Info from french Spanish border crossing you think the best .
Merci beaucoup
That's french as well

On the route, so somewhat relevant… Is the A66 the worst Autovista road surface in the country? Was terrible today south of Salamanca… like driving along the concrete on the southern section of the M25… 😤

In previous years we went down the Western route, then over to Teruel, Valencia, then across to Benidorm/Alicante.
Earlier this year (January), we went east instead, picking up the A75 at Cleremont Ferrand and all the way down to Perpignan, then non toll into Spain at La Jonquera. From there it was the AP7/A7
all the way.
We were pleasantly surprised at the weather, amd only saw a tiny amount of snow on the tallest of peaks.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Quick question, are you able to drive ti Spain from Calais without needing winter tires?

If you choose to head south from Calais down the Eastern route you will need to have 3 Peak tyres or snow chains or snow socks. To avoid the need for them travel down the western side. I go through Rouen, Le Mans, aire at Pissos then Zaragoza down to Crevillent.

There is an article in Connexion saying the grace period on fines for winter tyres in the Alpine and Pyrenees routes have been suspended for another year. However its notes that it is still a legal requirement and your insurance may be void if you do not comply. A bit like some certain yellow stickers!

Cheers Nigel, I would plan to go down the West coast as would head for the north of Spain

Last winter mid January we went down thru somport tunnel and back early March via bielsa tunnel, if it's bad weather follow the western route via irun. We have snow chains to cover us but if it's that bad would stay put. In Spain lots of parking on motorway for snow.
