We have started a trip to Spain and unfortunately a crack has appeared on our windscreen. We have Nationwide Flexplus but I can't see any mention of windscreen cover. It's not a big crack so wonder what your thoughts are as to whether we can leave it or take it to a windscreen repair shop. We are in Santiago de Compostella. My van is a 1997 Hymer s650.

As said it comes under insurance cover.
It is illegal to drive a vehicle in Spain with a cracked windscreen but most people do as it's near impossible to get an A Class screen changed in Spain.

When mine cracked (top to bottom) I rang the windscreen cover number on my insurance policy and they said continue driving! It took about 6weeks to get it replaced, involving several phone calls (to me) to ensure it was the correct size.

I'm in a campsite just outside Santiago de Campostella. The trip has been a bit of a nightmare so far. We drove from Edinburgh on the 21st to get the ferry to Santander on the 22nd Jan to travel for 8 weeks.
The journey down over two days was through some of the filthiest weather I have ever driven through. On the first stop over at Knaresborough the pipe under the sink came off pumping water all over the place.
Thenthe voyage across the bay of biscay was through heavy weather and we had to stay in our cabins. We both got a bit seasick so lay in our beds a lot.
We got to Santander and decided to drive into the Picos de Europe at a park 4 night stop that looked lovely. It was beautiful and the sun was shining with 12 eagles soaring around the place.
But that night at 3 in the morning we were hit by literally hurricane force winds. We were in the middle of a red weather warning. The van was being rocked back and forth and we both thought that our ends had come. My wife was shaking with fear. So was I to be honest.
The next morning after no sleep the winds were still high but we decided to come off the mountain. As we drove out the camper stop I stupidly drove over a bit of wire fence that had blown into the road and the wire wrapped around my front wheels.
My wife walked away a distance probably to stop herself clobbering me. Luckily I had wire cutters with me (I knew they would come in handy)so after scrabbling around under the van I managed to get the wheels clear.
We drove down to the coast and got ourselves in a nice small campsite.
We were ok for a couple of days then the windscreen crack appeared.
Its only been around a week and my wife is traumatised and wants to go home. The adventure is too much adventure for her. I'm all for carrying on hoping it gets a bit better.
On a positive note the lithium battery I had installed is working great.

Had an experience like that 6000ft up on Mont Venteux in France got up and turned the van to face the wind at 2am & went back to sleep. There were 6 or 8 other vans there, next morning only one other. And my wife loved it.

You haven't broken down, flex plus wouldn't have anything to do with it. Fingers crossed your insurance will though as it won't be cheap or a quick fix.

I had my Ducato windscreen replaced on site by auto glass very easy to sort with the vehicle insurer.

Get it drilled to atop it running , if it's not accrues your line of vision your OK.
Get onto insurance company to get it changed
Probably a special order get it done back in UK

A cracked windscreen is when I'm relieved by not currently having an Aclass. It will be covered by insurance but not much help if you can't source a replacement.

I think that applies to cracked plastic but on a laminated windscreen would make it crack more from where you try to drill it if anything. On a laminated screen the crack will only be on the outside the plastic layer will be intact and hold it together.

It happened to us in Spain 6 years ago in our 1992 Hymer 694.
To cut a very long story very short there was no way anyone in Spain could/would help.

We carried on regardless and when we got back off the ferry at Portsmouth we drove to Wycombe and by the time we'd had a full English breakfast down the road it was done.( Obviously by appointment)

PSV glass love Classic Hymers and I'm happy to be proven wrong but I guess you might not have much other choice.
Good Luck

Drilling is normal on laminated windscreens it will stop it running. It's surprising how long a preventative drilling will last
10 years on mine at present

I recently had a cracked windscreen on my car, 3 months later I got myself geared up to get it replaced.
My advice carry on as normal and if the police query it just tell them it just happened.
I can’t really see them making an issue of it but I’d not let it concern me

Few years ago in our 70s camper had same issue, went to somewhere in Porto (maybe express glass) who injected a resin to stop crack until we got home. Worth a google around your area "reparación de resina".

I'm sure it will, and those stories will become part of the tales you can tell friends and have a laugh over.
You've had a bad run but things will look up soon (y)
Check out your motor insurance for the windscreen, personally, I'd probably ignore it until I got home.

I think you will find Nationwide is just for breakdown. You would have to claim through your insurance for the windscreen

We're with Nationwide (Flexplus).. recently had a stone chip done, but had to go through my vehicle insurer, and not Flexplus.
I hope you have better luck with the repair than we have. We had a collision en route from Santander which caused cracking down the edge of the windscreen . Spoke to insurers in UK who said we are ok to drive so long as no damage in driver's vision. But if we wanted we could have it repaired while in Spain, well we have waited 5 weeks and no-one can find the replacement windscreen so we are about to start our drive north for our ferry on 12th Feb and will see what the insurers do when we get home!
Good luck with yours!

I would say it’s clearly insurance and not a breakdown, the question will be whether they do local repair like an Autowindscreens or needs to go to a base. Looks like a new screen from 30 years trade experience but almost all reputable insurers cover that without counting as a claim and just a specific excess (not your policy exces for accident etc).

The windscreen on our Carthago A class, was cracked by a stone thrown up by an overtaking car. This happened in January last year, near Canfranc. We were only one week into a four month trip. I was told a replacement screen was unavailable, so just carried on with the holiday.
Try not to park in the sun, this will cause the crack to spread. I covered the windscreen when parked. This did not spoil my holiday. This year I have comformatic gearbox problems, that does spoil your holiday.
