Can you use the wind out awning in the rain?

Yep, perfect for hanging up wet coats etc after being out walking in rain. Just be sure to adjust one leg higher/lower than the other to ensure that rain runs off it and doesn't collect in a heavy pool on it.
I always wind mine in at night regardless of how settled the weather is expected to be.
Apart from the risk of damage if a squall springs up the awning will tend to jiggle about/flap a bit even in a slight breeze making sleep difficult as the motorhome body will act like a sound box when you're inside.

Yes. As per above comments, best to wind in at night or while away from van during the day in case wind gets up. Sometimes we just wind ours in so that just a metre is sticking out at night or when windy. That way we can store our chairs up against the van without them getting soaked and have a dry space to swap footware before and after entering/leaving the van.

What I've tended to do is roll out the awning enough to keep underneath the door area relatively dry, but not so far that it needs supporting with the down legs. You can often leave it extended out all night because there is not so much torque that would damage it. So far!

As said, during some rainstorms you can get sudden gusts of wind that can, if the awning is not securely fastened down, destroy itself over the roof. It is always safer to put it away. I can vouch to have seen several awnings destroyed in this way. The awning is not normaly repairable and the van too may recieve damage. Awning £500 to £600 to replace plus labour.

The awning!!! Did I drop a leg? Did I drop a leg far enough? Are the storm straps up to the job? All these question in the middle of the night when you wake up to a gust of wind or some rain HaHa!
Ive seen a few wrapped over vans after some unexpected weather events.
They can do some damage, put them away and sleep well.

I've seen an unexpected sudden gale blow near Lake Garda, when the sky was blue and cloudless. Awnings on other outfits damaged. I always wind it in before going out or at night, and never rely entirely on storm straps.

We had one last year at the Afritzsee in Austria. Came out of nowhere and everyone was outside hanging on to their awnings, even with storm straps secured. It was scary and it wasn't worth the risk of trying to wind it in at that point it was so wild!
