I changed the cambelt and fitted a new radiator. Started OK but with red ecu light on ( it looks like a drawing of a fuel injecter). We have had this on and off over the years so not surprised. Decided to change the fuel filter, did not bleed it as should not be necessary on a common rail deisel. Went through thd usual procedure of turning ignition on, listening for the fuel pump until it stops. Then repeated this a half dozen or so times. Now the van will not start! Tried bleeding the filter from the water drain at the bottom water drain, drain pipe came off and fuel everywhere so probably bled OK. Engine still cranks fast but no start.
A friend suggested that if a diesel cranks fast it is because no fuel has been pumped in so effectively lowering the compression ratio.
Connected my Chinese clone Lexia ad got three faults:

Timeout on start.
Hi speed fan fault. P0480
Lo speed fan fault. P0481

Reset codes an retested, as expected the timeout code disappeared but fan faults still on.

Checked everything is plugged In. Now at a standstill. Oddly it seems the P0480 code can also refer to the vehicle road speed sensor!

Cannot believe a fan fault would prevent a start.

Any ideas.

Very possible, however I thought it would not crank with immobiliser not cleared.
Also tried using both sets of keys.

Have you a bleed vent at all? Primer pump?

The only bleed is at the bottom of the fuel filter, the cap also has the water detection device. Supposedly you put a pipe over the short drain spigot and loosen the cap, difficult as the refueling pipe runs about an inch below. Had to undo it a turn and a half, but fuel just foamed out around the cap and sprayed everywhere, pipe came loose. At least it us not petrol. There us no rubber bellows pump on the common rail diesels.

Give it a sniff of brake cleaner or similar and see if it will run on that. If so you have isolated to the fuel side

I’m going to ask a really stupid question, but was there and did you remove any bungs on the new filter, especially if there’s no fuel flowing 🤷🏼‍♂️

I've found it can take up to 2 mins of trying to start to get around the timeout and get the engine started after depressurising the system when doing some work. It may be worth persevering a bit longer.

A good question, I did not see any bungs, it is a cartridge that just screws into the holder with the drain/water detector at the bottom. I will remove it tomorrow to check.
Thanks.

Good idea squirming a little fuel into the intake. Although with a diesel it may not prove much.
Thanks.

We had a 99 Fiat Ducato on which the immobiliser fuel cut off solenoid at the fuel pump failed. It still cranked all right, but wouldn't start. Once the immobiliser was bypassed, she fired up a treat.

If a spray with Easy Start gets her going momentarily, I'd be suspecting the immobiliser fuel cut off at the pump.

Good luck sorting it out. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
