chausson Flash10
I’ve bought a bike rack for my Chausson Flash10 (unfortunately it’s the wrong one doh !). My question is will a standard bike rack do the job to secure my hubby’s wheelchair ? Can’t find anything designed especially for a wheelchair to fit on the back. Thanks for any help and advice

It's not just the bike rack you need to consider, it's the total weight on the back of the motorhome. Ours is 65 kgs and takes our 2 e bikes ,but we don't have batteries or saddles on them.
If you get a rack that takes 2 bikes a folded wheelchair will sit on it ok

provided its within the weight limits of the rack and van you could easily get a wheelchair on one bungees and ratchet straps will hold it in place im assuming the chair fol;ds

We used to put a Tricycle on ours after a couple of adaptions and that was quite weighty but depends on what sort of wheelchair it is?🤔😊

The best bike racks to get are the tow ball mounted ones.
Cost is between £200-£400 for the rack. (which may be more than a rear wall mounted one)
The main advantages are:
  • They take seconds to put on and take off, so you only have them on the back when needed. They can live in the shed/boot for most of the year, so they do not deteriorate
  • They are only 30cm off the ground, so you don't have to lift bikes (or wheelchairs) over your head to load them up.
  • They are easy to put covers on (no ladder required)
  • The rack is easy to move from vehicle to vehicle, so the same rack can be used on the car as well as the motorhome
  • The only disadvantage is you need a towball fitted. Not all vans are suitable.
  • Towballs can be the 'hidden' type which means it's invisible when not in use, so no need to spoil the lines of the motorhome.
This one is suitable for wheelchairs, £240.

That looks ideal. Thank You ! I have a rear tow bar which I’ve never used is that what you mean by a tow ball ?

I assume it is a manual chair?
If so then weight is not an issue, most bike racks will go to 50kg capacity and a manual chair is not so much ( Herselfs chair is 9kg), I have had hers on the MH bike rack a few times, just space the runners accordingly.

Will he be sat in the chair when travelling or do you allow him to sit inside .....:LOL::LOL:
This made me laugh out loud and my partner too especially as I am a wheelchair user lol suffered many jokes about “ tow her on a trailer behind lol”

If you have a towbar fitted id definitely get a towbar rack as it's a lot lower so it will be easier to lift the wheelchair and will take a higher weight. However for anyone else without a towbar already it would be an expensive way to fit a rack and use up a lot of payload

Surely not, surely wheel chair users dont have a sense of humour or like a bit of banter ......😁😁😁

Don't forget its not just the weight limit of the rack, it's also the weight limit that the back wall of your motorhome can take.
I would definitely not want 65Kg hanging off the back wall!
Itineo advised not more than 35Kg on the back wall of mine.

As others mentioned, if you have a tow ball then use it! Even if you don't have a tow ball, it might be worth at least considering one for ease of use and weight reasons

When our children were young one spent 6 months in a wheel chair due to a hip problem. We loaded 4 bikes plus his wheelchair onto the car bike rack(not tow ball mounted) and off we went to France. Never crossed our minds to weigh anything. The ignorance of youth I suppose!

This one is for sale in the classifieds section of this site
