Come to Germany! It's great for motorhoming/van life.
Hi, Funsters,

The two of us are heading for the Lake District on Thursday or Friday this week. We're CC members but have left it a bit late for booking. The small sites we found appealing are fully booked and the club sites are in some cases over 30 pounds a night for two adults and a van, plus whatever extras they might manage. We find this expensive and especially as we're entirely self-contained (only very occasional need for EHU, for example), thought about wild camping. I just saw on another post "plenty of wild camping in Cumbria". Any suggestions about this, please, including any specific recommendations? We bought the new Brit Stops guide, had it delivered but it never got into our hands. A long story.

Thanks.

Just go, take a map and a stab at anything that appeals, if it doesn't meet your expectations then try again and move on, just like I do. (y)

Whereabouts in Cumbria do you want to be?

Sounds like a plan
But shhhhh theres folk on here that would slate you for even considering a cheap or free night "britstops not at all id rather pay an arm and leg"

Are you talking about Cumbria in general or the Lake District in particular?
There is a lot of Cumbria that is not in the Lake District.
You will have to bear in mind that you are looking at the start of the Easter School Holidays.
If you have a specific area you would like to see, let us know on Fun and we'll see what suggestions come out.
If you are after the Lake District, try to look around the outer edges as the main centres will be chokka!

Nice little wilding spot in a dead end road with a pub at the crossroads (Derby Arms).

Another one here in a lay by but more road noise. Again has a pub nearby (Rusland Pool) & a burger van type thing for breakfast.

Five nights in the Lake District.

Approaching Lake District from Penrith, going to Keswick, south to Windermere and Coniston, probably exit via A590 to Kendal - or more directly to Kendal - then east on A684.

Above is my answer to DP_JAY'S question.

As for Brit Stops, Hamish, excellent service from them, no problem at all, but the book got lost on its way to me from where it was delivered to.

You can stay at Kendal cricket club for £5 PN no facilities apart from their bar :)

You can stay at the School in Coniston at weekends and school holidays, they have an honesty box but cant remember the fee. You can also stay at the social club in Coniston.

I'm local, know it well, and totally agree with @DP_JAY . It's a nice location. It was part of the old road that used to pass the Derby Arms.

Windermere Glebe Road N.54.358678 W.002.924 stayed last week no problems, ok till Good Friday, then ok after 7.pm. Read signs VERY Carefully?

Plenty of places to stop overnight on the Cumbrian coast.
Fewer “legal” places in the national park.

Download SearchforSites app , park4nite and Camper Contact.

Have a look through them in the area you want to be and then look at any you like the look of using Google maps etc.
Drive through any of the touristy hotspots you want to then head outside the national park to stay the night. The west and north would have most spots I think.
Gerry, @lorger has stayed at a pub in Eamont Bridge at the top end of Ullswater. I think it was free if you had a drink or a meal.

Please enjoy Cumbria and the Lake District, it can be really beautiful, but do be prepared for some really busy narrow roads.

Shap abbey has a lovely little car park with a gorgeous little stream running past it. Its next to an artists wooden bungalow come studio but, there's rarely anyone at the bungalow.
I haven't been there for quite some time but, its a beautiful spot.

It was actually Pooley Bridge, both pubs will allow you to stay overnight. The PB inn takes £10 PN but will subtract from your bill if eating, The Sun Inn across the road don't normally say you must eat just as long as you drink in the bar. We use it often so might be a bit more strict with first timers.
