Van conversion

Hi all just joined forum, were off to D&G in 4 weeks in a rented motorhome (looking to do a van conversion later). Just after some ideas on locations to wild camp along coastal route and Galloway forest.
Should I be aware of any narrow roads in this area to avoid.
Any help much appreciated
Stevo.

:hi2: w2f  Please be aware that the D&G council have put up a number of signs in popular areas, no overnight camping. In some instances police have spoken to motorhomers to move them on. That being said there a still a number of places where you camp off grid. Try the app search for sites or or park 4 night. Also have a look for the forestry stay the night scheme and places like Kirroughtree Forest Nr Newtown Stewart.

Yes there are large number of narrow roads in the area particularly around the Rhinns of Galloway. The whole area is farming dominated and they have some huge rigs and trailers. Stick to A roads where possible.

Two of our favourites...

https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=22771 - pub and restaurant adjacent.

https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=23896 - this having fill and empty available although not a drive over drain.

------------------------------- //// -------------------------------

This is quite OK for an over-night stop https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=28394

Just a couple of spaces here https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=23919

Be aware that there are now NO OVERNIGHT PRKING signs here https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=35782

Lots more on https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/

Mull of Galloway spit.
No services. Farmer comes round and collects £2 per person.
Had 4 nights here watching the seals and otters and just enjoying the peace and tranquility.

Agree with all above comments, we have just returned and yes its a lovely area but a lot of narrow roads, we stayed in a pub carpark on the way up at Carlisle.... really good 'Metal Bridge', then had a couple of nights at Ardwell Caravan / Chalet site, £15 a night, basic but clean and the site is on a beach.... loads of lovely areas, but lots of new signage saying no overnighters

Not that I’d want to puss anyone off I remember a while back reading - and just checked again finding summat a little more recent - summat along the lines ‘No Parking Overnight’ signs are not covered by a traffic regulation order. Non-prescribed signs such as this require special approval from the Scottish Ministers but there is no record of any such authorisation being given.

An enforceable prohibition of parking would require an appropriate Traffic Regulation Order with signs and lines that comply with the Traffic Signs regulations and General Directions.

Not sure its worth the hassle arguing if approached by the police though, I am surprised they’re getting involved though ie. takes them all their time these days to respond to 999 calls ☹️

There was talk of the local authorities being told to remove the signs for the very reason you state, can anyone confirm if they have started to disappear again?

We stayed at Kirroughtree. Good value and quiet and you can go mountain biking or hiking there too.

Was down in my old home town Stranraer on family business and was staying at Aird Donald caravan & motorhome Park. I took a run round the area and was surprised at the number of these signs that had appeared. This was around April. Things may have changed since then because I do remember there was a fuss over the signs appearing but in the Highlands. Not been back since but I'll have another look in September

All the temporary signs have gone, be aware however that many council car parks have existing 'no sleeping overnight' orders and these are being enforced. There are still loads of places to park up though, becoming increasingly busy this last weekend.

I spent a few days around the Mull of Galloway last week. I stayed one night in the car park at the light house at the southernmost point and would recommend it. There is also an accessible beach area 2 minutes away where campervans and motorhomes were wild camping. Spent one night at Low Glengyre Farm just outside Stranraer for EHU and facilities, fine for a night.

I will definitely be going back down that way in the next few weeks for a longer stay.

Have a great time but check your hire details we hired a few times before buying terms and conditions said you had to overnight on an approved site.

Might be an insurance requirement eg. they might view a site as being more secure than a lay-by/car park/beach etc?

Is that not taking the pee a bit.....overnighting outside a campsite! Wonder how long before that area will get closed off!
It's been done for years. There was a Polish family there for a good few weeks last year whilst he was working locally.
Part of it is laid out as a caravan site with hardstanding areas, benches, etc but not maintained.
There's even a Gents and Ladies toilet, freshwater tap and commercial wheelie bins.
I have seen some chancers walking onto the site early in the morning looking to get into the site's shower, etc facilities.

Here is the link for FLS Stay the Night

There are 4 sites in D&G and one, Clatteringshaws, has a CDP. There is also an aire type stopover just SE of Dumfries at Castle Corner, Caerlaeverock and overnight parking (honesty box) just up the road at Glencaple jetty. I haven’t seen any No Over Night Parking signs on any lay-bys (it is those I think that were not legal) but there are some on car parks. There are some big off the road lay-bys but the A75 is a busy road day and night so don’t expect a quite night.

The sign that appeared at NEB earlier this year was missing last week and believe removed by Council rather than "walking"! Having said that some folk were just ignoring it!

Hi...... what size van were you in ???? we were up there and I assumed we wouldn't get out there ( 8 mtr van ) as the last time I was there we were in a car and thought that was compromising with the times we had to stop in 'passing places'

My van is 6.8 m and my friend who was with us has a 7.5 m.
I didn’t find the roads any problem at all. 👍

There are dozens of spots in Glen Trool, Stincher Falls car park being a cracker.
I've wild camped in this area since the early 1960s & never been asked to move, more often that not, offering the park ranger a cuppa is a positive thing.
DO NOT set camp fires as this is frowned upon & remember, leave nothing except footprints & memories.

I've been up here nearly 50 years and every summer there have been tents , caravans, motorhomes and campers. More last year than ever before, one night we pitched up there and there were 14 vans.

options on both sides.. the track down into the bay on the right as you head up to the lighthouse may be a bit dodgy for bigger vans and as you say if its worth his while the farmer would come round for a couple pounds..sometimes if I was the only van there he didn't bother:LOL:
