Getting bored with the crap weather we decided to take a “fly off” holiday to find the sun. We flew to Gran Canaria and had a week at a fabulous five star hotel and had great weather all week, 26°C - 30°C. So far so good.

In order to make things as stress free as possible we booked taxi transfers from home to the airport. Because my wife has some mobility problems we also booked taxi transfers from the holiday airport to the hotel, explaining that it was difficult for her to negotiate the steps of a coach.

On arriving at our departure airport we were boarded onto the ‘plane and then were told of a one hour delay for take-off, so sat there on the runway for about 75 minutes in total before flying.

On our return journey the “taxi” arrived at our hotel as booked except that they had sent a coach just for the two of us as ordinary taxis were not available. Obviously we were faced with the steep steps for boarding, the very reason for our , (expensive), private taxi booking. After about fifteen minutes of arguments as to why they had left us with mobility issues we had to accept that that was all we were going to get.

On arriving at the airport we were told that we faced a one hour delay. At the end of the hour we were called to the boarding gate and “processed”. We were then held at the gate for another 90 minutes with only about forty seats for a full ‘plane load of passengers. We eventually left after almost two and a half hours of discomfort.

On arrival at our home airport at 2am instead of 11pm the previous evening we went to find our pre-booked taxi only to be told that, due to the late arrival of the flight, there were only limited taxis available and we had a further 45 minute wait in the arrival hall.

Arriving home at about 3am we decided we are ready for a holiday…….

Flying IS hard work. Try living nowhere near a major airport and wanting to fly out of the country. We're flying to Toronto on 16th Dec, the again on 13th March to Bali. We can't ever guarantee we can fly to Heathrow as BA quite often cancel the flights. Trains are very unreliable and wife won't go on a bus. So it's a long drive.

We had a break to Poland flying out of Stanstead in September and our consensus was "never again". We felt like cattle.

I'm not trying to outdo you but.......
On the 1st of march I was supposed to fly out from Goa back to Manchester. Long story short, I ended up spending 32 hours in a hotel waiting for an update on my replacement flight. Eventually I approached Air India and booked a flight to Gatwick direct from Goa. I then had to negotiate my way from Gatwick to my home in Chester. While waiting for my air India flight I was approached by the original airline - Gulf air - and offered a flight with three changes on route. I politely told them what they could do with that and set about making a claim against them once I got home. I got about 400 pounds back which from what I gather was a pretty good result.

Not sure I would risk flying now but have found that 90% of the time railway "passenger assistance" works really well.

Cruise holidays for me unless or until we get another motorhome.

We gave up on Flying with "Disabled assistance" 7 years ago because of all the hassle on being stuck either in the terminal or on the aircraft waiting for staff to turn up at the gate or to the aircraft.
We even got a bollocking from the head stewardess on a flight to Sicily for booking seats with extra room by an Exit, as "they are only for fully abled people to book, as they may need to help others in the event of an emergency" well why did the booking system allow us to pre-book and pay the additional money for wider seats by an Exit, as we had booked for disabled assistance for one of us.
We bought the MH soon after and haven't flown since, its just not worth the hassle at each end, plus the sometimes long, long walk to the gates, and being stuck waiting ages for assistance, it really is demoralising.

Good excuse for us... Why..
I don't fly, and Mrs Poppycamper don't sail, so we stuck in good old UK and our trusty moho steed....
Yes OK we could tunnel it.. but that is not the point of this thread 🤣🤣🤣

I know that airports and flying can be a bit of a hassle, especially if elderly, or less able bodied, but as a bit of a counterpoint -

My 23 year old daughter very rarely gets a whole 2-day weekend off from work (she works in the music / hospitality industry), but unusually had both Saturday and Sunday off the weekend just gone.

The crappy UK weather is getting her down and she hasn't had a real holiday at all this year (she has taken all her leave from her main job to work at festivals all summer (Glastonbury, Green Man, Love Trails, etc. Enjoyable, profitable, but exhausting).

So on the spur of the moment she booked flights from Bristol to Málaga.

Finished work at 4pm on Friday.
Had a meal out with friends in Haverfordwest (Pembrokeshire) at 6pm.
Drove to Bristol airport. (3 hour drive). Arrived just before midnight.
Slept for a few hours in her car, with the back seats folded down in a sleeping bag.
Caught a Ryanair flight to Málaga at 4am in early hours on Saturday morning.
Train from airport into Málaga city centre.
Spent €30 on a 24 hour city ticket giving free transport and entry to various attractions.
Had a swim on the beach and a coffee.
Had a tour around the hilltop castle.
Took a free boat tour around the port.
Visited the Interactive Music Museum.
Had a 45 minute flamenco concert.
Saw the Xmas lights extravaganza in the city centre.
Checked into her hostel for the night.
Woke up Sunday morning, left the hostel and avoided the queue by arriving bang on 9am for an explore around the Alcazar.
Churros and chocolate for a late breakfast.
Took a 90 min audio tour around the Centre Pompidou Málaga modern art gallery.
Train back to the airport.
Ryanair flight back to Bristol arriving at 8.40pm Sunday evening.
Drove back to Haverfordwest, West Wales (4 hour drive due to the M4 Severn Bridge being closed and diversion via the M48 and old Severn Crossing).
Back home and In bed for 1am this morning.
Monday (today) - Up and into town for 9am to take her car in for a service, and then back into work. Finished work at 6.30 pm tonight, had a meal with us, and recounted the above. ( I may have forgotten and missed a few bits out).
She's just been for a night-time beach swim (rather her than me in Pembrokeshire in December) and is about to get ready for bed.

Tired but buzzing!

Oh to be 23 again! 👍

It’s not just the airport and flying. Where do you stay. We have had a couple of breaks away when van in for repairs. Hated it. Breakfast at set times, too much food, lots of stairs, just not relaxing at all. Can’t beat your own space!

Can't understand the moaning seems very normal for todays flights and transfers. No one seems to care any more.

But you are not far from Perth.
I'd take the overnight sleeper train!

(I used to take the overnight sleeper every 6 weeks or so from Cornwall to London, it's a great way to travel)
