Who Carrys a Spare Wheel?

We had a blow out on the m5 last wknd. We were on our way to meet friends and camp for wknd. Managed to get off motorway as junction very near and we didn't know why we'd been flagged down. Hubby got our jack under the van, lwb, hi roof transit !!!!! Then proceeded to use contraption under van to lower tyre down on a wire.20 mins later we were on our way. I was so impressed .....and a little shocked !!!! Turns out he'd practised when we bought the van was my hero all wknd :)

Be prepared.. first thing I did when I got mine home was suss out what tools I need to get wheel carrier down ( and check if its seized) and the condition of the tyre. Also made sure I could crack the wheel bolts with the supplied brace too.

Years ago , the then GF and I went camping in Cornwall, I bought a tent, practiced putting it up at home, and stuck it in the car , we get to the site, and I proceed to throw it up, to find out that it was inside out . We had a chuckle and that was that . Anyway , being summer in Cornwall , we got washed out, one of the poles broke and we came home 4 days early... my mum says ' it looked a lovely tent.. and which point the GF says 'how do you know '? ... at which point my mum spills that I had put it up in the garden , and still managed to get it wrong.

We carry a spare wheel , now. Previous van PX d a few weeks ago didnt , it only had the gunk and pump stuff. Which I was always a bit uncomfortable with having , instead of a spare . New to us van has a spare wheel ,easily accessible in rear garage/locker.

Rightly or wrongly , I put the lack of spare wheel in MHs down to , mainly, weight and payload issues by the converters . Along with some MH designs not having any suitable place to store a spare ,eg , lockers too small , the underbody spare wheel space being used by the converter to fit water tanks , or no way of bolting spare to rear of vehicle etc.

I've resolved the spare wheel issue for me. I bought a new one with the same Continental Vanco tyre and it fits perfectly in the centre of the plastic base of the garage. I've now fitted boards above the whole of the lowered section of the base. On one side of the spare where are the cables, hoses, ramps etc, and in the other side assorted bits and pieces. The Quest Gazebo also goes under the boards, full width. This gives easy access to the things we need when we arrive on site and there is not much to remove if I ever need to get the wheel out. On top of the boards the tables and chairs sit vertically ( I will eventually get a lightweight rack for these. On the other side I have the cool box and folding boxes containing the Cadac and they cooking stuff. All very 5S!

Whenever I read these threads it's always a testament to the age of motorhomers.

I don't carry a spare wheel or a spare tyre, the van never came with one but the previous owner bought a spare wheel but it takes up to much space. I do have puncture control inserted to reduce the risk.

My car has no spare wheel 1 year old Audi A6, my wife's car has no spare wheel 3 year old VW beetle, my son's car has a "emergency wheel" all of them have puncture kit supplied which is the modern phenomenon with cars these days. I drive 30k a year with my job, 10k a year with my van. I have been driving since 1987, I have had one puncture, Nikki the same. I have been driving my motorhome(s) for 12 years and not had a puncture.

Tyres now days are so much better than what they were in every single sense including the way they disperse sharp objects that yesteryear would have punctured.

If I were to get a puncture and no specific MH tyre was available I would get a standard van tyre fitted of which there are plenty.

Things move on, Now Cue first ever puncture in van :D:D2

Interesting reading all the different views on this topic, We have on ordered our new Carthago MH, which only comes with a pump & glue stuff as standard, which I didnt feel happy about. When we asked the dealer about price & delivery of a spare steel wheel, they seemed to gloss over the question, and another sales guy said that "some carry just a new spare tyre" which I know some of you think as I did that should the worst happen you would still need to be transported to a tyre fitting place, which could mean many hours of delay if at night or whilst shut for the weekend, which would probably be the case for us with our luck!
So Even though we dont get the van for a few weeks yet, I searched the internet and looked at many 16inch steel wheels for a Ducato, many came up with differing prices, but then a Gumtree advert came up from a guy down south that was selling an entire set of nearly new alloy wheels with camper tyres left over from his trade in....and they match the style of our new van. So I drove down next day (long round trip) and bought one as new £150...result or what? More good news was that having passed this info onto this forum another funster got one also, and he had been searching for months.
Anyway thats two of us that feel a bit better kitted out now, and we have plenty of room to store it thankfully.

Great info, we have just got our Dethleffs Globebus, they included spare wheel in the deal as I wouldn't like to travel without one, it takes too much room in the garage and we are looking to fit it underneath, we only have to divert one shower pipe, not at entry point, wondered if anyone else had attempted this. If anyone has info would be great.

Many thanks

Check the tree size. The Gumtree one I saw was on the small side.
