I'm a newbie
Hi all, I have a 18 month old Fiat Ducato 160 multijet engine for my MH. Whistles under load at about 1800 revs. Suspect air hose to/from turbo. I think it is to the turbo otherwise it would smoke. No sure. As a layman I have looked at it and all looks ok. The clips look ok and the blue dots line up. Spoke to local Fiat Commercial garage and they say they are only franchised to service but not diagnose which seems weird. Told me I need to go to specialist Fiat outfit at Portsmouth or Tunbridge which is miles away. Anyone got any suggestions on any of this or had similar experience. Many thanks Graham

Some turbos just whistle more than others. The wife’s last Range Rover Sport (3.0 TDV6 TT) was a whistler when cold. Does the whistling subside when the engine (turbos) are properly up-to-temperature?

Worth checking the bearing end float just for your own piece of mind. Take inlet pipe off turbo, grab hold of the impeller shaft and give it an up and down and in and out wiggle. Best outcome is minimal movement in any direction, acceptable is a little in and out play, problems mainly come from up and down movement. Whilst you are doing this, check the bits of the impeller blades you can see for any obvious damage, marks, blueing etc.

If this is all good, refer again to above, some turbos as just more whistley than others.

The turbo on our diesel Fiat Panda whistles slightly done it for years not had a problem with it a smaller version of the ducato engine.😊

My transit work van used to whistle for a few seconds just before the turbo pipe blew off, was under warranty so the dealership fixed it.

What type of whistle? What volume?

if it’s like fan belt squeal, sharp noise then it could be the turbo gasket.
