Here’s an old chestnut of a question
When does a campervan become a motorhome?
What’s the “thing” that makes it different? Your thoughts on this?
To me L2K is a campervan? But dealership called her a motorhome?

I don't think there's a strict boundary.
Roughly speaking, a van or car conversion will be a campervan, a coachbuilt or A-Class a motorhome.

I note that What Motorhome magazine (which only a few years ago changed its name from What Motorcaravan) seems happy to include van conversions in its content and of course in France they're all "campers" (which must cause confusion to French people visiting the UK ... where campers are people).

In my mind motorhome is if it has toilet, shower etc. Camper van if no facilities.
This is my definition as well.
The normal bed, seating, table, cooker, sink etc.

A built in, working loo and shower = a Motorhome/Selfsustained.
A porta-potti and an outside shower = a Camper van/Not Selfsustained

A motorhome by definition is self sustained for days.
The limitation is the size of the water tank.

A Camper Van is not self sustained, it needs access to a toilet and shower.
The limitation is the size of the residents bladder and how smelly they are prepared to be.

Camper Van and Motorhome are the same thing as far as I am concerned. My Vans and Motorhomes have all been registered as Motor Caravan and if the DVLA don’t see a difference then neither do I.

One could be even more picky. Across from me yesterday was a shiny modern Autosleeper whooshbang which had to resort to an aquaroll and wastemaster to deal with the plumbing. Does the absence of adequate tankage constitute a 'camper' as opposed to a 'motorhome'?

My whooshbang carries nearly as much water and grey waste as my Compactline i143 did. If a site lacks a drive over grey water drain some people choose to drain into a container but it doesn’t change the classification, it will still be a Motor Caravan.

I think of our PVC as a campervan.

However, just after lockdown, we tried to book on a caravan and camping club site. I put our vehicle down as a campervan, and was told there was no availability.

I changed it to motorhome, and availability was instant and plentiful.

I was later told by the wardens that as the toilet facilities were closed, only vehicles with on board facilities were being allowed on. Hence in the eyes of C&CC, if it has onboard bathroom facility, it’s a Motorhome. If it doesn’t, it’s a campervan.

Personally I couldn’t care less - as the Great Bard said “…what is in a name?…”

And where would a DAF LF45 temperature controlled vehicle fit in? Like a sainsbury van on steroids, then converted.

FWIW, I think that if it was built afresh up from the chassis rails it's a motorhome, whether cassette or not.

If it were an existing van it's a conversion whether it was panel van or luton type van or a truck.

I think the P is quite specific - a specific type of conversion - and the V is quite specific because it could've been a truck, originally.

Maybe it's a motorhome if it's got a double floor? 🤪

I have 2 vans 1 work 1 pleasure if talking a about the van it could be either so sometimes one is referred to as the works van and the other the Camper.
However the Camper is often referred to as my van
The works van is not mine
Some times I refer to the Camper as a whooshbang
None of our vans Camper or the 6 birth van have ever been referred to as Motorhomes.

I said in a similar post who cares what you call an adapted builders van Luton van or in some cases a bus.

You name your children what you like so call an inanimate object what you like
Believe me the van don't care
Give your kid a horrible name they will never forgive you

We prefer the French term ‘Camping Car’ or the Spanish ‘Autocaravana’. We call her ‘the van’ but in ‘British’ conversation it’s ‘our wee motorhome’ because we do not have a wonderful, old VW Combi van - but we’re not very ‘posh’.

To me ours have been sometimes a van, sometimes a campervan, sometimes a Motorhome, and never a PVC. Depends on the audience. The Rapido is a 6m coachbuilt and the Bongo well marvelous at being small with onboard toilet and hot shower, (it didnt require site facilities other than water or dump facilities) its more like comparing an American Tiny house to a 24 room mansion they are both capable of being lived in.
