Which new sat nav?

Still waiting for someone to explain how Google maps is "Free".
Don't you have to buy a smartphone and pay monthly for mobile data.
How much does that all cost?
So on that theory you have never used a free Aire or had free water from one.;);)

For me, one of the most useful things on my Camper 770 is the ability of point on screen navigation. Takes you to exactly the point on the map that you touch. Especially invaluable for my work. (y) Don't think Google does that?

XGody 886 .Works a treat. Igo mapping with truck measurements ,weight, length, width ,heighth ,etc;
This is the one I bought from a spanish supplier

UK suppliers available:)
Even better, you can download it as an app from the Play store and run it on our phablet (y)

Have just downloaded the trial version (full version is £25) and been playing around with it - you can definitely set the max speed (haven't found out yet where to enter the dimensions though). Simulating a few of our planned journeys and there is definitely a difference in ETAs depending on the vehicle type/max speed set (y)

Checked it against one of our actual journeys last year:
- Google maps says 06:06 hours (barring any traffic)
- Igo says 06:45 hours with max speed set to 60mph and 06:22 with the max speed set to 65mph
- according to my Google timeline the actual journey took us 06:44

So its looking good so far. Will run it past mr mousy tonight to see what he thinks, but I reckon you've just made him a very happy driver :D

2 reasons I wouldn't use my phone for maps is that it is just that ,a phone & if the copper is doing his job ,you are using a phone; especially in the UK. second I don't have any need for data on my phone.
+ my screen goes off after 60 seconds:)

If you use your phone connected to your your radio via a cable then it doesn’t switch off and it charges whilst you’re driving

One of the best things about Google Maps is that it’s compatible with Campercontact

Select which Campercontact stop you want to visit
Click Route
Select Google Maps
Simples

Want to stop off at Lidl en route
Add stop
Type Lidl
Choose the Lidl you prefer to stop at from those shown on the map

No other sat nav does that

My Garmin 760 camper does... Just input the map reference.

The law doesn't say using a phone, it says a mobile device! So you'll get done with a hand held navigation device if a copper is doing his job

Anyway, the question was asked, I have answered it to the best of my knowledge I have used many if not most, been lucky enough to test several simultaneously on long drives across the Country and Europe

I use Google maps, I simply say OK Google, directions to "ABC" and it brings up my route, and if I want I can look at an overview or a detailed plan of the route, I can add way points to make complex routes and if I want I can look at pictures of the route along the way with Google Street View

I could, but I simply start and that's that, I don't need to touch the phone again as it is already Bluetooth paired to my head unit

It works for us, and if you have a smart phone it will cost you nothing to try it and it could save you a lot of money and frustration

I tried that although I have an alpine radio with usb. Appears the usb is play only as it doesn't charge when connected to the phone. When I connected the phone to the usb charger in the van it still goes off after the programmed shut down time.
Still while I was out there I have polished & sealed the cab & door area +overcab so thanks for that (y)

My existing tom-tom is just above my head in the roof so I can just look over the top of sunglasses if needed( usually as glasses are for distance & dark)
With the new 7" one the wife wanted it so she could see it as well so it is on the dash about 60cm arms length away.
One I can't see it with sun glasses on as they are so dark:cool:& even with them off & using the sun shade it is still far too light to & second is the volume full up I can't hear over the engine . Needs repositioning & the volume sorted if possible.(n)

Your radio needs to have Apple Car Play to use Google Maps

I’m amazed that there appears to be no mention of a snooper sat nav.
It’s a 7 inch screen and an input for a reversing camera. Add the dimensions of your camper to avoid problem en route, but the best benefits are updatable Camperstop Europe wide, Archie’s campsites, LPG garages and a whole host of other downloadables related to camping. Reckon snoopers have saved a good few marriages with the information contained within.
Live in jersey so Europe is my playground.

Just ordered the snooper 5900 satnav, warehouse deal £129.

Google Maps always 100% up to date, free and has live traffic information plus a pretty good search engine "OK Google find me a campsite"

Sat Nav's are dead
Eddie, just to say Google maps can be out of date. When a friend had an accident the prosecution used Google maps as part of their evidence, In this instance Bing maps were more accurate but even saying this visiting the site and taking pictures provided better evidence. Google bing etc do not update maps in real time. Personally I think this technology should be used for “guidance” only. Most sat nav’s can be updated to the latest maps anyway.

For what it is worth - I use Copilot in my Motorhome on a Tablet (or decent screen size) on android. This lets me set up the van size and has real time updates , speed cameras, road restrictions etc... and only costs me my annual subscription. - Has never let me or my wife down

Always use our Garmin Camper Sat Nav. Put in measurements of motorhome, it’s not let us down yet, even in Europe...

We are looking for something like this as our TomTom Camper Europe has died on us and is unrepairable. Does this one allow you to put your own POI's in? We are subscribed to www.pocketworldgps.com for our speed camera base as they show mobiles as well as static.

I use the same at the moment, and at £10.99 a year it serves a good purpose at present.

I don't know how many times I read posts about sat navs based on price or quality, I bought an expensive Snooper Ventura in the spring of 2012, I put my vehicle details in and it routes me accordingly, its been excellant and 7 years later I am still using it, was it worth paying £300 plus, yes

Hi @JaG

Just to confirm the Current Tomtom units, which are very different to your unit, do Static and Mobile cameras including Mobile Hotspots, Red Light cameras, Average Speed cameras and Traffic Restriction cameras. Whilst you can add the camera files from Pocketworldgps you cannot link them to a Warning Sound or Voice.

I believe so but as I don't use them I've no idea how you do it. Someone who does & has one might be able to help.
