Which is your favourite Port or ferry route and why?

A bit off piste, but several posters have mentioned a 20% discount on the Newhaven Dieppe route for wrinklies. A quick trial reservation online didn't bring this up? Grateful if anyone could clarify as I liked the route when I used it for a trans France cycle ride.
Lenny HB is your man👍😊

Plymouth - Roscoff….call me an old romantic but just have happy memories of boozy night crossings with friends on the old BF ships, stuffing yourself at the restaurant buffet and an easy trouble free way in to France …or the start of a long lazy trip down to Spain. We’re 3/4 hr drive from Plymouth so it’s a nice start to any trip. Just fit’s like an old glove.

Unless, like us you have planned to ‘enhance’ the crossing experience with a night in one of the swanky outside cabins with a balcony and …..

We were cycling down through France and wanted a bit of luxury to start it off, so the cabin was part of it. A spectacular late afternoon spent lazing in the sun on the Hoe watch the marine traffic with a chilled bottle of white and a picnic. Boarded for the 8pm sailing and settled into our starboard cabin - yes I’d even requested it to ensure we’d see the sunset if the day was good - and out on the balcony with a further bottle of vin to view it

Probably 20 minutes or so past the breakwater and someone turned the lights out - thick sea mist and foghorns all the way thereafter! Oh well at least the bar was open until late!

I was going to reply “Sandeman‘s late bottle vintage Port and Harvey’s Bristol Cream” until the vari-focals re-focussed!! 😂🤓

We always try to get a Commodore cabin on the way out , it’s part of the holiday, worth every penny. I don’t drink so Nick’s lucky as I drive as much as him and can do the early morning bit. He can have his fill of wine or cider and the commodore cabins are nice to relax in after a nice dinner with more wine if necessary!

What's going on with P&O.
Just done Euro Tunnel return £352 June 6th out July 7th back.
DFDS £253 same
P&O £2,078 same.

When I first answered I assumed the thread was for ferries leaving UK.

Widening the scope, as others have done, mine would be Piraeus-Patmos, which we did last year, as it has been my ambition to take the MH to that my favourite Greek island. I think we were the only MH on the island and welcomed everywhere, but I was used to that after 40 years from first visit. We were there for 3 weeks, flew back to Poland and out again for another 2 weeks on the island. Magic, including the ferry.

After that my favourite ferry would be one to many Greek islands. One year I would like to spend a couple of months ferry-hopping through several islands. I must ask Blue Star Ferries if they do a 'Rover' ticket. It is easier than previous sailing -it misses some aspects of sailing, but still on the sea.

Ancona to Igoumenitsa with Anek. Very dog friendly on the ferry, nice cabins and it makes me very happy to step into Greek soil.

We are about to set off to Newhaven, and crossing to Dieppe tomorrow. I was mulling over the fact that over the years we have favoured various routes and carriers but recently seem to orientate back to DFDS on the above.
Our reasons are personal of course, first it's a good deal still (including the over-60's 20% discount), 2nd. The port is quite low key and being less popular seems more relaxed. 3rd, it's just a 4 hour sailing and you disembark a little further South. Then there's the fact that Dieppe isn't too bad, still retaining some bucolic charm and a nice little centre. For us the south coast ports are convenient although Newhaven is a good hour further to drive than Portsmouth, but at least it's closer than Dover.
So a list of reasons to favour this route. What's your current favourite?
Newhaven dieppe always the cheapest and easiest for me

In terms of appearance Bonifacio rates pretty highly, outragiously expensive for a ten mile crossing but a beautiful channel as you leave for Sardinia.

Another vote for DFDS Newhaven Dieppe for all the reasons previously given. I expect this has already been mentioned but you only get the 20% discount for over 60s if you make a phone reservation and it's applied for the whole group as long as one is over 60. Also, a further 10% is applied for a trip longer than 10 days. Ends up as a very economical deal for a pleasant crossing to a lovely town.

My favourite port is coming into Bergen. It looks like toy town as you approach through the Fjord. It's excellent all the houses a different colour.
Newhaven doesnt have quite the same ambience as Bergen, especially with the sodding scrap yard right next to it. If I was an illegal I’d turn straight round and go back to France. Newhaven does have have lots of different colour houses though.
Still a good port for a quick crossing and can recommend the night ferry with a cabin, we then munch some miles the next day with little traffic.

Liverpool to Dublin then drove down to Rosslare and then Rosslare to Cherbourg waa our favoured route in the 90s very relaxing and since mainly a freight ferry all meals included .we did that for a number of years beat the long drive down to Dover .The company was called Pandoro a subsidiary of of the dreaded P&O later merged as P&O Irish Sea it did help that the missus worked for them at the time. Now days as I have to cough up the ferry fare I nominate Harwich to Hook of Holland excellent value with caravan and motorhome club discount and the pooches get to stay in a pet friendly cabin

Tunnel every time to France. Have done Ouistreham, Calais, Cherbourg & Dieppe, but the tunnel wins.

Ireland used to be the HSS out of Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire, but that stopped and now it's Pembroke to Rosslare.

Plymouth to Santander…….makes Spain 110 road miles from home. (y)

However, depending on where we want to end up we’re happy to travel from any port.

Tunnel is by far the fastest and easiest……but definitely not the closest to us.

All the boats ferries are boring. Much preferred a crossing on the hovercraft.

Imujden Newcastle and an easy run into Scotland.

Plymouth - Roscoff. We live 15 minutes from the ferry and if the return trip is busy we could be home before some of the cars have left the port. Plus the driving in France is more pleasant than the drive to any other south coast ports in UK.

It's applied to the total cost of a return trip of more than ten days.
