Hey Guys 😀
Need some help, where is a good place to base ourselves to explore Marseille for tomorrow
We don’t mind hotel with secure parking / campsites with easy access via bus/train or taxi
Thanks in advance 😀🇫🇷

Do please go on internet to have advices about the town itselt; there are deffo places you MUST avoid. Criminality at its top in those places. I can't do it for you now, not with wiggling baby on my knees... yelling ... WHERE'S my bloomin' lunch, woman!! ( It's a boy... ok 8 months old , but I bet he already knows about his gender superiority!!!! )

I would stay on the aire at Carro, which is West of Marseille and get the train in. Marseille has a lovely old port and town and some rather less salubrious places.

Thats about the best advice you can get for Marseilles, I am struggling to think of another place in Europe with the same reputation of criminal activity.
NB yodeli is a French national and knows.

I would even add: in the bus , walking, no matter where in fact, have an "obvious" bag you're not really fond of, and put kleenex water papers of any sort as long as you don't really need them, and have your precious papers card money in another one hidden underneath your clothes. And for god sake don't stick your phone in the back pocket of your jeans!!!

No where for camping.

I’ve got tickets for both Rugby finals, unfortunately can’t go now so handed them over to my son, who’s flying / hotel.

Nearest we could find was over 45 minutes away with no late public transport back to the site. 🤷‍♂️

We’re also heading down to Marseille next September for the rugby. Can’t find any sites within a reasonable distance of the city so have decided to leave the MH parked on a site, take the train into the city and stay in a central hotel before heading back to the MH the following day.

Are the French not providing temporary camping sites for the WRC?

That’s what we thought of, but wasn’t sure our van insurance would be happy if anything happened to the van whilst it was unattended overnight. 🤷‍♂️ (y)

That’s a good shout. I’ll need to check on the insurance cover if we leave the MH overnight. Thanks for flagging.

Yes the train goes from La Couranne-Carro. It’s quite a walk from the aire but we’ve done it ok, better on an ebike. Whilst the trains start early they do stop at around 8pm I think.

We rather innocently or should that be stupidly drove through Marseille have to say it was rather scary as the penny dropped, we didn't hang about.

Thanks all for your input. If we go, we could stay at a campsite in Aix en Provence then get the train to Marseille.
Or give it a miss altogether……

The police station probably safest, give them a good tip!

Don’t miss Marseille lovely city stay around the port quite safe but watch out for rip off tourist restaurants & normal precautions in a city
We used the Carro aire which was very secure overlooking the water but stayed the night in Marseille near the port
nice train ride 1 change to the port 8 euros one way if I remember right

Carro has local fish market can’t remember what days but a few restaurant on you’re door step within 200 meters also bus which will take up to train stations or 20 min walk some up hill or lots of steps
See previous post for bus timetable

We have found France the best place for motorhomeing and be welcomed but the area you are looking at and further west along the coast the most unfriendly you could find anywhere, signs everywhere , no campingcars, no decent Aires, it's campsites or nothing.
Been to or through most french places but not worried we haven't been there.

Hi, I’m also going to the rugby. Are there any other options for secure overnight parking for a motor home?
