Where to get propane cylinders in Spain?

We have just been to the local Repsol but they dont have the regulator.
Benicàssim is nearby. Does anyone know the name of that shop? We could ring ahead

Pretty much any half decent campsite shop will have the regulator that you need.

We’ve driven to the Benicàssim Azahar site as there are two camping shops nearby.. The guy at the gas depot said he’d never seen that thread before on our connector....
That old “never seen a anything like this before” syndrome ?
Now to wait till they open at 5 ....

Your connector is UK calor style, he will only have seen the ones suitable for the Spanish bottles. He is not being difficult. If you buy a Spanish propano bottle you will need a Spanish regulator for it and a hose that connects to your inlet. As you don't have a built in regulator on your inlet connection you need one on the Spanish bottle at least. Don't buy the cheaper adaptors, as these are only used when you have a built in regulator..
If the Spanish regulator has a nozzle to take a hose the worst case is that you can cut off the regulator from your calor hose and push it on the Spanish regulator, and secure with a hose, small jubilee clip..
Best of luck.

UK gas regulators are not compatable with Spanish bottles. You will either have to remove your regulator and buy a Spanish one, which is why I suggested you went to a motorhome dealer, who would have done that for you and would have had to parts in stock.

Try here just outside Benicasim

Jaws, if we go to this depot will they sell us an English calor gas Or do we still need a regulator and pigtail hose etc?
Do not know how much deposit is required ( not a lot though ) and refills for a big bottle is currently 12€ Beni
Regulators are anything from 8€ to 15€ depending where you get it
If you are not confident with pretty basic spanner work then yes, find someone to swap the reg for you .. about 2 minutes work :-) )

Back in the early 2000`s. Cepsa only sold Butane, not Propane. I paid E5-00 for a Repsol bottle at Benni Market. The feretaria supplied a regulator to fit. In my case I had what is known as an Extendastay unit. Which allowed me to feed into the gas line downstream of the R-V regulator and shut the main tank off. Useful when we where getting short of gas and not wanting to move the R-V!. I think I still have the whole kit somewhere?. Back then we paid no more that E9/10 for a refill.

Hi there!

We had exactly the same problem as you - about three weeks ago so you have my sympathies!

After reading that they had a camping shop, we went to stay at Camping Tauro in Benicassim for a couple of nights to try and get it sorted. Their shop is in the town.

We had huge problems buying the gas bottle as well as the contents from a Repsol or Cepsa supplier/garage (we tried 6 or 7 different places), but Camping Tauro sold us a Cepsa bottle but they only had Butane so we had to go with that.

We bought the pigtail and adapter from their shop.

We're heading home now and the first thing we'll be doing well be getting a refillable gas bottle fitted! ?

ETA: here's the link to my thread - everyone was very helpful with their advice!

Thanks
We are in day three now on this search!
I’ve got as far as getting a Spanish regulator fitted on our existing hose from Mobil Rodin. Took us four or five drives past as their address was a kilometre measurement on the N340 - impossible to put into sat nav!!
The next job is to find someone to sell us a bottle of gas. We prefer propane but would accept butane at a push. The woman at the shop said we had to find an engineer to give us a paper to make it official! Going to see what my fellow campers suggest at Azahar campsite tomorrow!

If you see a repsol truck just flag it down and buy a bottle off the driver. Cash.

Thanks

Officially a safety certificate for the motorhome is necessary for the initial supply of a gas bottle in Spain which is why most people have to obtain second hand ones.

That was our experience, Hence the "Benni Market" bottle.

Apparently Asian shops sell them. I might hunt for the closest Hiper Asia. I’ve seen a few around. I’ll also call Camping Tauro which is down the road and see if they have a bottle I can buy.

this is the Spanish regulator that has been screwed into the orange lead that used to screw into my calor gas bottle. Do I also need a pigtail hose? Still to source a bottle.

A long shot.....
Have a walk into Bonterra Park. There is a notice / for sale. board on the side of the Reception building near the barriers. Might be a bottle for sale there.
We have an onboard regulator and bought the necessary adaptor & pigtail from the Camping Tauro accessories shop at the top end of Benicassim just beyond the junction with the N340 and the medical centre.
Just remembered .... Someone on Bonterra once told me that they had got an old repsol bottle from the recycling centre at Benicassim. It is just beyond the AP7 behind Azahar and Bonterra Park. It is signed "EcoPark"
Suggest you find an image of a Repsol Propane bottle on your phone so that you can show people what you want??
Good Luck

Thanks we aim to go to the shop when it opens. As we’re in day four of our search now it’s really not a question of money now- we just want it sorted! But thanks for your tips .

I'm a bit concerned that type of regulator might give you too much pressure when fully open?

If the picture is a representation of the contents then that is not a regulator but an adaptor and will allow the full unregulated pressure into your system, extremely dangerous.

The Spanish regulators do not have a threaded connection but a male push in connector that fits into the pipe and is secured with a hose clip, and all the ones that I have used have a simple flip over on/off switch on the top.

The connector in the picture you posted of your system is unlike any that I have seen in that it has a threaded outlet connected to your system by a high pressure pigtail, I presume it is a crash regulator

Edit: Both the Spanish regulator and adaptor fit onto either butane or propane in the same manner ie push down.

A member of our MCC Northen Counties group is selling aa cylinder if anyone up North is looking for one. (It’s on the fb group) :

That looks like an adaptor to me and should only be used if you have an on board regulator built in. Do not use it if you remove the regulator you have with the calor bottle. It's just an on off valve there is no regulation of pressure and will be dangerous to use.

ok if you are still nr beni go to the airfield site at el grau about 5 kms from you the gas man goes there and i am sure you will get a bottle off him or someone else there

Camping Tauro is the name of the campsite asked I think also the camping shop both in Benicassim. We bought the same adapter as you've got from the camping shop, but our gas system has a bulkhead mounted regulator, so the adapter was sufficient. I'm not sure if they have the regulators but it's certainly worth a call.

Here's their website:

We got butane 13k bottle with contract from Tauro campsite shop
No propane to be found anywhere.
- does anyone know if it might mess with our underfloor heating? We won’t chance the fridge on it.
Very glad to be able to cook again!

For goodness sake Jac, give yourself a break here and get it sorted by a professional. With all respect, you don't know enough about this to be safe.

Please don't take offence at that, but life is too short for all this anxiety.

Many thanks for all the help on here!

If you’re touring in Europe for any more than a few weeks, get a refillable system. They are available in spain and Portugal! It’s the best way in the long run. ?

it will either make your van more saleable, or can be transferred between vans easily ?

are you sure that's a regulator ? it should tell you the working gas pressure in millibars if it doesn't its just connector for a Spanish Repsol / Cepsa gas cylinder

Many thanks for all the help on here!
if your still struggling i have a friend on Camping Tauro who has a new Safefill refillable 7.5kg cylinder which is full of propane with a standard UK propane connection and included in the sale is a Spanish adapter which allows you to top it up at any Spanish LPG station as well as UK LPG outlets when back home . You could use your existing UK gas bottle mounted regulator . www.safefill.co.uk
