Hi guys im 70 in June when should I start process off to give me plenty of time to sort out what's first, I've had heart by-pass 18 years ago type 2 diabetes well under control thanks in advance regards steve

In honesty I would have already started, 6 months is very optimistic with medical conditions

You can apply 90 days before your existing license expires and best to do it with at least 56 days remaining on the expiring one. Order the D2/D4 forms pack now, they can not be downloaded. Some main post offices may have them over the counter but it is easier to request them online.

For your medical Carole found using an independant company better think its called D4 or at least thats what came as on the bank statement

Remember to keep a photocopy of ALL forms you send to DVLA - medical is only valid for 4 months, so if they loose it they tell you to get another - not a problem at the moment as they seem to processing reasonably quickly.

You can continue to drive in the UK, whilst medical conditions are checked out, but not abroad - if license has expired.

We had several PCV drivers who were driving like this for many months, whilst the cogs of the medical section slowly ground through the process, it's all down to speed of reply by your GP and Consultants.

With your medical record if you want to retain your c1 you will need to arrange a medical .The best to use are the d4drivers they usually have local places that you can book. They do the eyesight test as well., pretty basic. You can use your own doctor but it's usually expensive and they can fill the forms in wrong.
Once dvla have your application they will most probably want additional tests like a treadmill for your heart. Not sure about the diabetes..
All this can take up to 6 months.

Because of this I use my GP even though it costs more. I have medical issues and the DVLA will want confirmation of conditions from someone who has access to my medical records, so I might as well shortcut the referral and get the GP involved from the start. Last time I got my C1 through very quickly but this time they might want my Consultants comments as well, which will slow things down. If they ask for another stress test I will let my C1 go and try to wait patiently for my new under 3500kg van. I had to pass a stress test earlier this year after my heart attack/stent and I don’t want to go through that again.

p.s. Section 88 driving applies to license renewals pending DVLA processing not heart attacks.

You have to send in your license with the application, don't you? So can't drive abroad from the time you send it in! Unless you chance it of course. Don't know the penalty of driving with no license abroad.

Carole didnt have any medical issues having read you possibly may have you would do well to use your doctor rather than D4 Drivers or any other company like that

I suppose you could obtain an international driving licence whilst yours is still valid.
I didnt send in my licence and a lot of others haven't either. No issues from the Dvla. They just ask you to destroy your old one WHEN you get the new one..
