Citreon Relay
Currently in the process of purchasing a LWB L3H2 Citreon Relay…..

Obviously I want the vehicle insured to use for pleasure while working on the vehicle. But direct line state that the vehicle won’t be insured once works starts to convert to a camper van, only insured as a van.

I have seen some threads regarding telling the DVLA about change of log book to campervan with sending them pictures. But I am going to be a long way off from this stage.

Can any one shed some light how to insure while I carry the work out.

Is it when you put windows in that it's classed as a campervan for insurance? That and possibly the bed frame?
I'm sure I've seen some leaving the windows as long as poss for that reason?

Couldn't get mine changed to motor caravan at DVLA so still insured as a van but with modifications windows etc. No good if you are planning on installing thousands of pounds worth of equipment or carrying your rolexes but still legal. I think NFU insure as a project but you have to complete in a set time and there is no guarantee that DVLA will accept it whatever you do.

You need to talk to the insurance companies that deal with self builds. People like Adrian Flux, HIC, A Plan and there are a few more. They insure the van as a van in conversion for a period of time (usually 3 - 6 months) then when you have completed the conversion, you get the DVLA to update your V5 to “Van With Windows” or if you are very lucky, “Motorhome”. You then send your insurance company pictures of the conversion and agree a revised value.

Please note that if you don’t finish the conversion in the time specified, the insurance can cancel the insurance.

This is the process I followed when I self converted a VW T4

Both Adrian flux and brentacre will give you a conversion policy. Their policies have no time restriction so if it takes you the full year its not a problem. I have used both these companies and had these policies over the last 2/3 years

They do ask you to update them periodically if you add high value items so they can list them on your cover.

Dvla won't consider it a camper till it has a bed , windows, cooker and an area to sit and eat. They require photos to back that up.

Insurance don't really care what's on the v5 though they insure it for the purpose you tell them .

Do more research before you start. This Forum and others are full of stories about it being very hard now to get DVLA to change the classification to a "motorcaravan". This is the official title. Many who have done it are now classed as "van with windows".
