Had a sound like a washing machine full of coins, garage saying it is a wheel bearing and the Ford ones have plastic in them, they say if one broken the other not far behind.
Is this true or are they trying to get more money?

When it comes to brakes, suspension and steering. I always replace both sides when any component needs replacing. It is fair to say that there is a much higher chance of a failure in other side if one side has already failed.

Depending on age ?,the older wheel bearings I don't think had plastic in them .
But not a big deal to replace .
What year and how much are they quoting you ?

Thank you, I will ask them to do both, they said hour per side and a bearing, does this sound correct

It's a 57 so I guess 2007?

personally if the garage wants a fair price to do them i would get both done same time.

but its not absolutely necessary.

What's the mileage ?
If it's your nearside wheel bearing that's failed, it's probably as a result of potholes.

The later Transit front knuckle type are a pain in the bum to change but not expensive.

An hour each side is a worst case scenario. Took an hour and a half for one side of mine as every single bolt was corroded solid and the press struggled to pop the old bearing out.
I don't know what the book time is on that job. But two hours for both sides isn't out the ordinary in my limited experience.

Geo and other mechanics on here will know for sure. But I personally wouldn't quibble with that.

We would be looking at circa £90 each + vat
may I suggest you take it to Yoricks work shop he, quoted circa £25 labour + two bearings :xThumb:
Stop telling lies. Go annoy somebody else.

Hmmm... Word of caution..I've done the odd front wheel bearing on light commercials.. The last one was an 08 transit rear wheel drive van..they can be a nightmare.. Even some of the garages that do them were having to upgrade their press , they were that hard to remove.. I ended up using a grinder to get it off..
And I wouldn't be doing the other side just because one side has failed..

Yup, the place I got mine done at had troubles getting it out. They said they hadn't had such a tough one before. They had a decent press as well.
I am friends with the guys there and I generally watch and help out when they do jobs for me. So when I saw him swearing at the press, heating it up and belting it I had a jolly good laugh ribbing him ;)

The tightening torque is critical to a long component life as well.

Rearrange the following into a well known phrase or saying PRAM & DUMMY
You seem to be under the allusion I'm trying to annoy you.
Hurty feelings not high on today's agenda
But in your defence you could fit the bearing in 15 minuets if you discount the other hr spent dismantling, reasembly and road testing

So your answer to the OP was neither relevant or helpful.
Kind Regards
Geo

More like 15 mins per side.
Get vehicle in from car park jack up remove old bearings clean out fit new and adjust refit wheels return to car park fill in jobsheet is the fitters real world.

Was that a nice reply or angry reply ?

Hello thanks for the advice, the garage charged £195 for both fitted.
Free hoover out driver and passenger side and said free winter check and levels, antifreeze etc all good and topped up screen wash for free.
Even got a mince pie and seasons greetings.

£100 per hour. That's proof that most garages are thieving scum.

Top mechanics are on £35k ish. That's £17 per hour. Thieving garages cream off £83 per hour themselves.

OK I'm not sure what to think, now
Oh dear

That's to fool you for the rip off prices.

I always work on double what you pay someone is the true cost. NI, Pension, Sick pay, holiday pay, PPE and so on. Plus the building and services are not free.

And their big house and big campervan ?

I'll bite my tongue now

I'm now completely confused,
I DON'T KNOW OF ANY GARAGE CHARGING £17/H
I googled and thought £40-£60 a bearing

Oh dear

I'd like to see you do a transit in 15 minutes..
You need an on wheel hydraulic puller for them..

As for Csmith
rough garage rate at a decent indy is about £50 an hr round here, your mileage may vary.
Bearing is about £20 retail
and if the other ain't broke, don't fix it IMO unless you just like throwing parts and money at a car.
in reality the garage will probably have a price per side, so cost unlikely to be any different if you have one done now and the other done when it does wear out.

Very strange I put 2007 transit front wheel bearing in Google and didn't see £20 bearing they were all with fixings and 40-60 pounds.

I thought I had been treated fairly, now I don't know what to think and yes had both Done as don't want to be bothered by it again - it will be scrapped or I won't be driving hopefully before it needs another

Oh you've already had it done..
Why worry then, if you were happy with what you paid.
Mk7 bearing on amazon is £18.99
I could get you a real quote on monday from my motor factors if you were that fussed but a bit pointless if you've already had them both done.
Sounds like you've paid for peace of mind there rather than what had actually failed, although you've not stated what you actually paid so who knows. :xlaugh:
