Why is it always blue? Maybe it’s because my uniform was blue and I still wear mainly black or blue t shirts.

Once you dial 999 the Operator will identify your approximate location, which, if you’re calling from a mobile phone, they can detect by identifying which phone mast your mobile is connected to. Most Android smartphones can be located to an area less than half the size of a football pitch using GPS signal and Wi-Fi location data. If you’re calling from a landline, they can consult a database of addresses linked to phone numbers.
anyway back to work enough of this frivolity have a great day and hope no one has to call emergency services, if you do enjoy using W3W you know you want to
That's absolutely correct. It's great to have options.this is my last post on the subject and will say W3W is an alternative and just one option for stating a location point.
You mean it did not take an half an hour or more for the AA to arrive !Just by chance , the wife stopped to help a neighbour who had broken down , the neighbour was on the phone to the AA recovery but was struggling to get located , My wife took the phone to help , after a few minutes of getting nowhere my wife says to the AA operative would W3W help , the AA says yes please , within a minute the recovery was on its way
Which one?... and one of them is spelt wrong..
I convinced my 6 year old daughter that near Birmingham there's a Pylon Farm. The Pylons, once built, reach up to wires they can follow until they reach their destination. It was one of those Dad things that she tried to believe but had doubts. It took a year or two before we got to the "Dad you're being silly". I think, as ex-GPO, ex-POT, and ex-BT, that this must be similar to the tracking method you're referring to.That's because they are not confined to homes now, they are out there tracking you.
The number will be correct the address may not be, emergency services will see the main number of any circuit. My land line is ex directory and should not be displayed the exception is emergency services which is why kids and people get caught out. Most landlines use caller line identity which is instant. Not always though, can be wrong which is why they immediately confirm the number upon receipt of the 999.
Mobile triangulation is possible but takes time to start getting near anything usable to find people and has to be done by mobile phone operators and then back to control again.
In an urban areas forget it as it can include 50 houses. Therefore I love what three words which is instant and really accurate in just three words.
No W3W or GPS involved just proactive policing amazing isn’t it.
It is truly amazing Jim just how do we get on without W3W and agree you would not use W3W to catch a nuisance caller just making the point that we can all go to a location without such aids. Why would w3w be used to catch a nuisance caller?
Tesco delivered my shopping yesterday. I assume they used GPS and a postcode to find me. Amazing isn't it.

Just a question. Is it only land that is covered by W3W or is the sea and ocean area covered as well?Yes its amazing, I share your love of postcodes, we all know our postcode and can relate it to anyone if they want to find us. Sadly though, traditional postcodes only cover houses.
But wait...What if every 3m parcel of land in the world had a simple easy to remember three word postcode? how much more useful that would be, amazing even.
The globe so yes is the answerJust a question. Is it only land that is covered by W3W or is the sea and ocean area covered as well?
Even more amazing is how we manage to find destinations without GPS, W3W, postcodes etc. Our reliance on technology is disconnecting us from the natural world whilst you may mock me the skills of navigation and locating places along with ‘knowing’ where we are when we are ‘out there’ are skills that many once had and total reliance on technology is dumbing down our senses and leave us much poorer as individuals.Yes its amazing, I share your love of postcodes, we all know our postcode and can relate it to anyone if they want to find us. That will be useful for yachts in distress - I wonder if it's been tested yet?Every 3m2 on the planet, land and sea, now has a simple 3 word postcode.

I have W3W on my phone, but have yet to use it "in anger".
This thread has rekindled my interest in the App.
Got me thinking that it would be a good addition to the App if there was a red emergency phone icon built into it where the user, in an emergency, could simply open the App, hit the red button and it would dial the emergency services in whichever country you are in whilst you are talking to them, simultaneously transmitting your three word position to them.
Is this too simplistic a view?
Oh yes! We had forgotten semaphore as a method of communication !I have decided that when I go into the middle of nowhere I will make sure that my phone is fully charged and I will take 2 flags with me in case the phone does not have a signal.

I would love to know how they figured it out."London-based startup what3words has given every location on Earth a three-word English address; now, it's working to support as many languages as possible so that users worldwide can find any destination in their native tongue."
I suspect they are going to make a lot of money from it.I would love to know how they figured it out.
Did you see the video posted earlier in this thread. It’s very interesting.I would love to know how they figured it out.
