I'm an anal retentive with ocd tendencies so I divide the litres purchased by 4.546 to get the mpg figure. Worse than that I have a spreadsheet that calculates mpg, mpl, cost of fuel per tank & per mile and maintains both annual and life of vehicle actual costs and costs per mile for fuel, servicing and repairs, depreciation, financing costs and provides both an average mpg for life of vehicle and also a forecast annual mileage. When the depreciation charge falls well below the servicing and repairs cost per mile, it's time to shift the vehicle on.
