Just Looking
Exp
I'm a newbie
HI Guys. Looking for some good quality jump leads for the MH. What ones do you guys have and do they have enough 'kick' in them. The ones I have are the ones that relatives buy you when you get your first car and they resemble Black and Red shoe laces with a paper clip on the end. :)

Some say 3000amp for vans then others say 800amp is amazing and adequate...etc, also the minefield that is the cable CrossSection - For diesel engines or a larger engine capacity, thicker cables with at least 25 mm² should be used, as more current is needed for bridging. Cables with a cross-section of over 35 mm² are becoming increasingly unwieldy. Truck drivers, however, should use one with 50 mm², as a significantly larger and more powerful engine is installed.

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Confused .Com

Hi I don’t use jumpleads anymore,do have a set that I used when I had a truck.
I don’t know where you could get thick ones nowadays maybe a truck stop.
I preferred now to carry a little booster kit.I have one called Roy power and it never fails to start anything, including large batteries. Was about £80 on eBay so maybe try that.

If the starer battery is so flat that it needs the fattest jump leads then I'd be very wary of using them. The potential for a spike damaging something on a modern engine control unit by throwing so many amps at the battery would convince me to trickle charge the battery first.

I’ve got one of those hand held iClever Jump Starters, supposed to be able to jump start large Diesel engines.

I hope I never have to use it for that, but it does make a good back up power reserve pack. (y)

Heavy duty ones. But I’ve never needed to use them as I keep the battery charged up. Fingers crossed as well !

I have a Noco battery jump starter. Not needed to use it yet other than charging a phone.
It negates the need of another battery and jump leads and by all accounts, is the dogs licky bits.

Be careful using jump leads on your Motorhome if it has the canbus system.
It can send a spike in power through the system that can affect elements of your electrics.
I have a pair of extra long heavy duty jump leads and used them 18 months ago to try start my Motorhome battery during lockdown.
I was jumping off a BMW X3 3 litre diesel, so no slouch with supplying the power.
I couldn’t jump start the Motorhome.
I kept continuing and in the end, I used a power pack (size of an iPad tablet) and it started the battery.
I ended up taking the Motorhome battery off and bringing it home to trickle charge.
On my next trip out, I noticed that the speedo had stopped working.
All other parts of the dash were working but the needle had stopped.
After much research, I read that jump starting the battery can lead to this through the surge of power through the system.

I think I remember using some back in the 80's but can't remember what they looked like.

I think these were the last ones I used….. :ROFLMAO:

A solar panel and a solar controller such as the Votronic duo to charge the starter battery is all that's required. My starter battery is never flat and I'm fairly certain that it's the original so 16 years old.

If you use jump leads then connect them up properly and ensure the connections are well made, as any extra resistance will lead to more current being drawn, and leave the "donor" car running at a fast tickover for at least 5 minutes . That'll put a small amount of charge back into the flat battery and slightly reduce the amount of current that the leads will need to handle. When ready to start, turn on ignition and allow all the checks to complete, as well as ensuring heaters have worked. Then crank. If it doesn't start easily then let the donor carry on charging the flat one for another 10 mins and try again.

The little packs are amazing. Something the size of a household box of matches has started a 4.4L V8 diesel, 2.5L diesel Land Rover, 2.5L diesel VW, motorbikes, etc. And acts as a USB power bank if I'm away from power for a while. Can't remember the last time I used actual jump leads.

I would also go the mini powerbank jump starter route. Multi purpose and easy to use.

I've got a MSC Overland Waterproof Car Jumper & Power Bank.
I've not had to use it yet. I also got their extension leads to enable easier connection to the battery on my boat

I have the same I and it goes everywhere with me either car or boat. I can vouch for it starting a Volvo Marine Diesel TAMD 41P, 6 cyl 6 ltrs with ease. (y)

That's nice to know. Normally one would only find out how good it was when it was really needed.

Agreed, infact I didn't need to use it and was only testing it's ability to do the job. Mid channel is not the time to find out!

Always had a set of heavy duty jump leads, and needed them too on a couple of occasions, and now we have the NOCO 40, which up until now, I've only used for USB charging.

As said above, a belt and braces job. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
