What is this for and what kit do I need to operate it, it is on an Elddis Autoquest 155 with an underslung spare wheel and looks to be something to do with the spare wheel. I have not fathom out how I get at the spare wheel remove or replace

It looks like you'll need some sort of 'brace' with a hook on the end to operate this.

Two on Tour is correct, my Ducato has a roll of tools and there is the one in the picture, plus another extension and another for undoing the nuts holding the spare wheel. First get a can of WD-40, you might need it? Good Luck! 🤔

The winding tool is 5 sided "for security". You insert the tool into the slot, then wind it down with the wheel brace. It's not the smoothest mechanism in the world. There's actually a really tiny indicator next to the winding slot that tells you when it's fully up.

Once the wheel has been lowered, you then have the fun of extracting it from the wire. Remember how it goes as it's a head scratcher for refitting!

If you ever intend to change the wheel yourself, do a practice run to make sure you've got all the bits. I'd hate to have to do it the first time in the dark.

On my PVC, once lowered, release ALL the cable because, to get the hold plate through the centre of the spare, it has to be turned length ways.

I had one on my old Marquis. It's even worse than the infamous ALKO caravan spare wheel holder.

thanks for the help and advice, i located a black tool with e hex he'd one end square at the other which appears to fit both the wheel brace long tool in the standard kit. i have pu into the kit under the passenger seat my own crank handle with the appropriate socket to fit. Which way do i turn the handle to release would be the most helpful advice now?

Lefty loosey. The cables stretch, a lot of it is plastic, and the gears becomes stiff with road gunk. It's not a satisfying and reassuring mechanism to use.

And sometimes prone to releasing itself if subjected to bouncing on rough roads or over seriously high sleeping policemen - don’t ask how I know, but also many other instances reported on the interweb!

I’ve put a ratchet strap around it all to ensure that doesn’t happen (again!) and to avoid things seizing or getting covered in road gunk, put an £8 eBay spare wheel cover on.

It does have a locking notch at the end of the travel and a little indicator pops up in the window... which is nearly impossible to see, and it feels horrible as you keep winding when it feels like it's binding up.

On mine, the bolts that go through the lifting plate, goes through and bolts to the carrier so that the spare wheel cannot be released accidentally. Doesn't yours? 🤔

No, unfortunately not. On this one the carrier plate is secured to the wheel by a single plastic ‘lobe knob’ (their words not mine!) on the upper side, so staying hoisted relies entirely on the mechanism locking correctly. No doubt a cost saving exercise.

All i wish to know is,do turn I it CLOCKWISE to wind UPor is it COUNTERCLOCKWISE? I think i can work out how to mount the wheel thereafter. at the moment there i one held in place so I wish to lower the wheel to check if it all works as I have no idea when it was last used. Simple question demands simple answer! But thank s so far for all the advice.

I don't know the year of your van, but my 2010 Peugeot Boxer was recalled to have the spare wheel winch replaced. Apparently a few spare wheels had lowered by themselves!!!
Worth checking for recalls on your vehicle.

On mine, but it appears that yours may be different, to wind up, it's clockwise.

The small white oval is the indicator (under a clear plastic cap) and it turns clockwise for up, CCW for down. The Peugeot supplied kit included the black tool with 5 sided end plus the tubular spanner for the wheel nuts better than my wheel brace.

asit was raining by this time i decided not to go the whole hog of removing the wheel, save that for a better day! Have a good time, wherever you are travelling, we ar5e off to Germany on Wednesday latish to stop on the road side GPS 50.997123, 2.054714, near to Calais but umma side road well after going through Marck. It is a dedicated Motorhome stop. no services at all
