Hi just got a new samsung phone with a dual sim.
Not got a clue about this so please be gentle, when you get another sim to use abroad how do make sure you are not using your main sim data, and can you still receive watsapp messages to your normal number on the new sim data allowance.
Also is there anything else I need to know?

Not sure how you set it on Android, but with iOS you can select whether or not a sim is used for data, similar for roaming. WhatsApp is data, so cellular number/sim is irrelevant.

Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Preferred SIMs for Calls, Messages, Mobile Data

As Lenny said you get to choose it. It is quite in your face so hard to get wrong as the phone will ask you questions. I would advise turning off the non active sim unless you have an enormous battery as it will be eaten quickly.

I don't think the number is irrelevant as the data has to be charged against one number or the other.
While that's true, the point Scottish Scrutineer was making is that even phone calls and video use only data not voice. Therefore as long as you have WiFi, or SIM1 or SIM2 providing you with data, WhatsApp will work. Which of those the data is being charged to is irrelevant but you will need to keep an eye on data allowances.

Nick has a dual sim android phone phone which is very handy . In Turkey we had this,
Sim1 Lebara
Sim2 Turkish Sim

Toggle Lebara off in settings but it was still in phone.

WhatsApp worked on the Turkish Sim data as normal. I have no idea how. But you do nothing else, it’s in the magic ether!

We then had a Turkish number so had we broken down or whatever we could call our group.

On my iPhone I had to use an esim which is fine but a bit more of a fiddle.

This is not how my samsung works, I select which sim carries out which of the 3 tasks in sim manager

Just don't do what my wife did & think you can assign the Sim 2 number to the original whatsapp. You just appear as someone new.

If you’re outside the EU though and don’t turn SIM1 off completely and just toggle off individual bits of calls, SMS and data you run the risk of unexpected charges. Far safer to turn it off completely . Our children are the only important people who contact us and that’s by WhatsApp.

I’m on O2 and at the border in Serbia , I’d bought an esim but I’d not set it . Suddenly remembered whilst sitting in the queue to cross and I’d run up £4. That was just google maps. We’d not entered the country yet!

You was lucky, Bangkok Airport I logged onto Airport WiFi to contact daughter for a lift, wife thought she had but hadn't. She ran up a £30 bill in a few minutes. I did contact her supplier & got it reduced to £10.

God, that’s the trouble isn’t it. We know exactly what to do but that momentary lapse! It’s not as though you’ve not been there before either!

So you can't send/receive messages in your normal watsapp?

Yes you can , I think he’s confusing you. That’s the beauty of it. You use Sim2 data but it’s your normal WhatsApp account. I’ve no idea how it works but it does!

You can use What's App in other devices just using WiFi these days.
You need the phone on to set it up first time.
I often use is on tablet and PC even with my phone turned off.
