I have the DK eyewitness books for most EU countries but rarely carry them now, they're quite heavy if you're taking a few on a trip.
Just use them for reference before leaving, sometimes photography a few pages of particular places of interest.
After that it's just online research, lots of useful interesting stuff on fun from well travelled funsters
For the uk generally on line research before we go. Might download and print off the occasional leaflet. Also we may visit tourist offices in the area and pick up leaflets.
Our "Bible" is the Wild Swimming series. We have the France (edition 2 is the one to buy) Spain and Alps. Not only useful for finding Wild swimming spots but there are very good possibilities at finding completely out of the way hardly known waterfalls, lakes, gorges, clues and river stops with possibility of staying the night. These get logged onto a map for the area.
We use the voie vertes book (or via verdes map on the internet) for organising our cycling holidays and used the Danube Cycle way route last year with the book .
