Ah the joys of online translations!
My daughter is seriously allergic to nuts so when she came to visit I translated a card to hand to waiters saying she mustn't have nuts.
Unfortunately, the word chosen was tuercas - nuts which fasten onto bolts!

One thing that is really useful is words ending in "ent" and "ant" are very similar in english and spanish, ie restaurant = restaurante and student = studente.

There are other rules with certain words too, like words ending in ance ie ambulance= ambulancia.

Knowing words ain't much good, unless you also know the pronunciation thereof. My sister and I wanted to purchase some mince so I said I knew there was a butchers on the market, that's where we went but we wanted roughly a pound - but what on earth was half? (a kilo) Ah he said as I pointed to the tray of mince and to the 500g mark on his big clean white enamel Berkel weighing scales - medio kilo! Si senor, por favor!
You reminded me.
I once asked for "seis Jueves" - six Thursdays, instead of "seis Huevos" - six eggs (they do sound similar). It gave the shopkeeper a laugh anyway.
