Does anyone know what DVLA needs to see and be shown on a van conversion to be classified as a motorhome and then change the description on the V5?

Any help, especially first hand, would be great 👍

There's a full description on the DVLA Gov.uk website.

Whether you get it on the V5, depends on the day of the week, what the DVLA WFHer has had for breakfast, and whether Mercury is in alignment with Taurus.

Choose the base vehicle wisely, especially if buying used. Ive read on DVLA website the list of vehicle types which can be re-classed 'motor caravan'. A chassis cab isn't one of those.

I don't recall others sufficiently to remark on them.

Thanks for the replies 👍

I’ll go and hunt now 😊

Had a look through the Gov requirements.

On the face of it things look straightforward but as said before it depends on who’s dealing with it 🙄

I did mine when it was easy but some still got refused so i created a comprehensive doccument that went through the list of requirements and photographs and annotations how it complied, eg including an arrow pointing at the gas cupboard etc. Put in as much detail that shows how it complies but none where it doesnt eg Awning :ddont mention it if it hasnt got one but 2 pictures showing open and closed if it has.

What I find odd is there doesn’t seem a requirement for toilet and or shower.

When this was first concidered it was normal for commercial campervans not to have toilets let alone showers. (My Bongo had both in 2013, the shower on the rear door with rear awning.

The Daughter is considering having a cover over the rear doors and have a temporary shower under it.

Probably one of those blag bag water things.

She will have cooking facilities and sink.

Space is limited as she only wanted a SWB van but high top.

We’ve got to get a garage in the back for mountain bikes and bed above 😊

An alternative to the black bag is a 12-20l container with a kettle of boiling water added to cold to get to 40-42C (use a fish tank thermometer) and a 12V pump. my first home made camping shower had a rose from a watering can.

That’s a cracking idea, thanks.

I could put pipe work in etc when doing the cabling before we panel the walls up.

I love work arounds like this 👍

And therein lies one of the major issues that hold back motorhoming in the U.K.!

If there were also requirements to have self-contained toilet and hygienic washing facilities, along with mandatory fresh and waste water reservoirs of an amount sufficient to provide 2-3 days of endurance, then the public would be able to have extra confidence that their local beauty spots are less likely to be blighted by human waste. We should adopt similar standards and laws to those in New Zealand:

These also set out the consequences of infringing the law and provide protection for the homeless.

Thanks.

Yes I find that odd also, to me a toilet and shower is what makes a van a motorhome and not a camper.
The van I sold in September I built myself and it had toilet and shower and was registered as a motor caravan but that was 7 years ago .I think van with windows is now more common on the V5.
I think it depends who looks at the paperwork and if they have any motorhome knowledge.
As the1andonly said send as much info as possible to back up the fact that the van has been built to the DVLA requirements.

Cheers Cris 🍻.

We saw a Transporter at Lincoln show which had a shower (removable) in the back. You popped a tray down with a hoselock style connector for drainage, and pulled the curtain up to clip to the top. Shower head was by way of a long pull-out cord on the kitchen tap. Quite innovative.

Although we have full shower facilities in our Hymer we rarely use the heated water tank (Truma 12litres) but use a Hozelock (other, cheaper makes available) portable shower, in our shower cubicle. Takes about 5litres of water - fill, say, day before and allow water to warm up a bit and then boil kettle to top up just before using. Basically a garden sprayer but with longer hose and shower head. We have done this for years, basically started when we were off grid and needed to conserve water. Go Outdoors sell them also. Better than the black bag showers.

We carry one of these too…. Don’t use it in the Motorhome, but rather outside when I’m fishing and ‘er in doors’ says you ain’t using the main shower! Had mine for at least seven years and it’s great… does need an additional couple of plunger pumps half way through! Highly recommended as a shower! ✔️
