Hi, Off on a holiday that includes a couple of days safari & a visit to the Himalaya's, just wondered if it's worth getting a small cheapish digital camera to use alongside iphone? I do have a good camera with big lenses but don't want the hassle of lugging it around. Any thoughts please? Thank you

Personally I'd buy a Sony HX90 Compact Camera with 30x Optical Zoom
If you buy from someone like Jessops you could get an 'almost new' one for a decent price
(although you may have to wait a while as they sell them as fast as they get them in)

It a great all round camera, it can be used for 'point and shoot' photos
It's easy enough to use
And it's small enough to put in a pocket or leave around your neck under clothing.

The best camera is the one that you have with you at the time you want to take a picture and it’s usually the phone….😎
In general that’s absolutely true and I know that I use my phone FAR more than my compact cameras these days, but if I were going on a ‘big trip’ on safari and to the Himalayas I wouldn’t want to rely on my phone, especially for the far distance shots. The risk of missed or unsteady shots are too high, even with my excellent iPhone camera, and trying to compose and shoot using the phone’s screen is a nightmare in strong light. Again, leading to missed shots. So I’d definitely be taking along a small camera with an excellent optical zoom such as the Sony, not least because it would be much quicker to use to compose the shot.

I was in the same predicament. Couple of more than decent photo taking mobiles, a relatively decent bridge camera but wanted something in between which could take a better photo but not be a lug to carry.

Owing to spending an amount of time near or in water I ve plumped for a more multi use waterproof compact camera for 50 quid off Amazon

Of course for a special occasion where you know you are going to take lots of shots then a camera for the job is essential…😎

Depending on what you want to do with the photos you may want to consider a compact camera that has the functionality to record in RAW format?

As an alternative to Sony, have a look at the Panasonic LUMIX compact camera range too…….👍
