We had an issue at the weekend with our Whale Expanse heater. We have only ever used the heater on the 2 bar electric setting. The heater was working as normal on the Friday night and into the Saturday but I noticed that the Whale CBE duo was showing some faults.

Strangely the gas flame icon on the left of the tap button was illuminated with a static red exclamation below it. When I pushed the tap button to read the fault code all 12 orange bars were on. The lockout will not allow us to use either electricity or the gas.

I contacted Whale who emailed me the standard 2 lockout fixes including the one that removes the fuse for 10 minutes that appears on most websites. Needless to say neither of those fixed the issue. The problem is everytime I switch on the 12v power the gas flame icon on the panel immediately comes on. I can hear the actual make tank make a clicking noise and the green lights on the CBE Duo dim as the tank is taking power then at around 13 seconds the red exclamation light comes on.

Last night I disconnected the 240v and 12v battery supplies in the hope that having zero power would help either the tank or the CBE Duo to reset themselves. I reconnected the supplies and unfortunately the same happened again with the gas flame immediately lighting up followed by the exclamation mark and 12 orange bars when the tap button is pushed.

I also completely disconnected the CBE Duo controller from the motorhome electrics to see if that would reset it. No luck, as soon as it was reconnected the same faults returned.

I phoned our dealer we bought the van from and the first date they could give me to book van in was 2nd week of May!

Has anyone else encountered this type of lockout or can suggest maybe if the issue is with the heater or the controller or even a fix? Whale were useless and just said contact our dealer for them to look at it.

Cheers

Hi & welcome! :hi: Hopefully someone will be along to advise on this or did you get it sorted Kojay?

It sounds like a PCB or fan failure. If you search for a company near you that does caravan servicing you may be lucky, but Easter weekend I expect them to be stacked out with work

Hi,

There will be a data cable running from the back of the control panel to the water heater. Worth checking that it is still connected and hasn't been disturbed or damaged. Our whale water heater is the underfloor sort, so the cable is in the bottom of a cupboard and could be bashed.

We had whale water heater issues last year which turned out to be caused by the air heating controller somehow interfering with the communication between the water heater controller and the water heater. The air heating worked fine, the water heating didn't, but it took a replacement of the air heating controller to fix things (we have the two separate circular controllers rather than the duo)

Cheers,

Robin
