.... becauase Im sure I've somehow mixed it up with Tobermory!

I've wanted to stay over in Oban for a couple of years ever since (somewhere) I saw the lovely pictures of the harbour with it's multicoloured houses etc etc. Now Im here, it's interesting certainly and we've had a nice day and are parked up in the car park nr tesco, it's not got the multicoloured houses. BUT we've had a good time and tomorrow will be on Mull!!!

Im still not sure why there is a Roman Colluseum in Oban though!

Mull is a great place to visit, spectacular beaches and the rest of the scenery is pretty decent too. The site at Craignure has good views and the pub across the road does good food. Last tim3 I was over this early in the year, quite a few things weren’t open yet.

we're on that site now, used it before and got a great view of the bay, moving on today and heading for tobermory for the day.

Theres certainly plenty not open, but enough scenery etc to enjoy the island. only got today then back onto the mainland for the stretch home again tomorrow morning.

We spent a week on Mull last May, great spot for the night is Calgary bay, there’s a small cafe/kiosk there and it’s donations. They have a tap if you require water but nothing else apart from stunning views.

Worth visiting ...
Calgary Bay - then drive down the west coast of Mull, to overnight at Fidden Farm. Drive the short distrance from Fidden Farm to Fionnphort to catch the passenger ferry to Iona - plenty of parking near the ferry, even for the biggest of motorhomes.

The west coast of Mull is worth the drive, although challenging in places. Very very few tourists make the effort ;)

We're staying in Oban in May for 2 nights and intending on going to Mull as a foot passenger. Any recommendations regarding public transport on Mull, or places to see in Oban would be very welcome.
thanks

West Coast Motors runs the bus services. I've never used them, I've seen them going past the site I was staying at a couple of years back, Port nan Gael, which I will be returning to sometime soon. There is no 'circular' bus service from them but there may be local operators that would do a trip around the island.

Parking can be really difficult at Calgary especially in nice weather at weekends and summer hols .. after a fair bit of travel on single track road … the drive is nice tho - and if you get parked the beach is fab

Follow the coast road a couple of miles north of Oban to Ganavan. Big car park, free 2 hours parking (pay to stay longer) nice beach looking out to Mull. Good walks.

not enough time to do this sadly, but we did that route last time, was challenging but fun.

Neither public transport or places to see (there are lots on Mull) but if you like seafood the seafood shack down on the harbour in Oban is a must!

The sea food shack on the harbour is the only decent thing about Oban. I find the rest a bit of a dump.
Its definitely not what i thought but wouldn't go quite that far, but that's very subjective to be fair. I mean, certainly a picture of where we stayed that night shouts "dump / FLT" but was perfectly practical. In february, lots shut, but some potential I feel.

All that considered, £100 on ferry tickets, £80 on earrings, £20 on lunch in "Food from Argyll" which was lovely, £30 in pub, £45 in Tescos is a reasonable spend to the localish economy in February. While I wouldn't actively go there again, it's a very convenient for ferry and enough not to turn me off. A bit like Fort William in my experience

Don't try and drive up to the monument, it's tight. You can weigh your van in waiting area for the ferry, there's weigh bridge in the middle.

8 in a year many similar sized places will have that in a month.
Oban is not what it was, but very few places are. spent many a happy holiday in Taynuilt nearby.
Agree with Debs about the fish shack. Not yet had scallops to match the ones we had there years ago.

Steep but ok
Tight as in, I had to go and knock on doors to get cars moved so as I had access through, and then remonstrating with the owners that my vehicle may well have been an emergency service vehicle equally baulked from proceeding. Reversing back was not an option due to the queue of traffic behind me.
Mike.
