fiat ducato Pegaso
Hey 👋🏼

Can anyone shed some light on what sort of costs I’m looking at for Welding on both side of the undercarriage rear of the front wheel arches. It’s been welded before but my mechanic said they did a crappy job, and it needs attention for the MOT. He tried to buy in the panels but on a 2001 Fiat Ducato Pegaso rollerteam parts are like golden goose eggs! I know its more about the man hours than the parts, as they said they weren’t that expensive as it the metal sheets. But does anyone have any positive suggestions, without putting a downer on my day. As so far I’m in a good mood guys! Just looking for some proactive suggestions on what to expect. So far the magic number by my friends that are retired mechanics is around a grand.
Mucho appreciation of your gentle yet kind responses.
Cheers.

What bearing does that have? It’s at the garage being worked on now, so not looking for a welder just some rough idea on costs from anyone that’s had the same works being done in the last . I’m not giving away location to thieves or scammers! I may be blonde, but far from dumb. TY

There are specialists for Fiat bodyworks south of Gloucester, You do not need to give your address details, nobody does but a clue as to the county or region cannot affect your security. Sorry i added this while previous was being typed.

It’s already in the hands of the garage, didn’t you ask them for a quote…?

I did find your response a bit brash to someone who was trying to help you..... quite clearly you now know why they responded in that way, people on here are very helpful you will find.

I had a similar job done in Essex but only one side and it was around £800, although that included a couple of other small welding jobs. It seems to me as though jobs that entail welding attract a premium, even though those undertaking the work are often (skilled) mechanics not welders!

If its already in the garage to have the work done then you're at their mercy .

So they will charge you what they charge you. I'd talk nicer to them though than your reply on here to folk trying to help as I find the price goes up if you piss off the garage.

Hey welcome to mhfun..:).

You won't get that done for less than 800 unless your sleeping with the welder.

That's what my wife did back in the day on her mini. So it cost her nowt.

Though it was a rough job :giggle:

As a welder i can say it is Very very hard to price a welding job before you actually do it. Most times a 2inch hole will become a 12 inch hole by the time you cut back to good metal. It also varies depending how good a finish you want. If you just want it plated it will be far cheaper than if you want it to resseble anything like it did originally.

And if its done right it should only need done once

If its structural it needs to be heavier plate than just thin steel.

They said it depends how long it takes.
if they cant give you at least a 'ball park' figure I wouldn't use them.. without that you are giving them cart blanche to charge what they want.. and once competed they have you over a barrel ..

Any garage that does this work regularly should be able to give an estimate ..

Why i asked Your base in the country as my neighbour has own garage business and 75% of his work is welding rusty vehicles including quite a few motorhomes. Still you seem happy with the garage you have have ask him for a price why expect a price without somebody looking at what is required.
Oh and by the way not a thieve or scammer just someone trying to help.

They have worked on it previously and this time wasn’t able to quote as they were searching for panels to save them the welding. But couldn’t find any available. So having to go down the welding route.

My initial post was kind, lighthearted and respectful. The response I replied to was blunt, so
I was just as basic with my response back. I did kindly ask for no keyboard bullying, and this first post has left me not wanting to be a member if this is the responses some of the members have submitted. At no point was my thread rude or patronising. 😞

My response was as simply direct as the response I received. If it had been a friendly introduction, then my response would have reflected this.

Not to put a downer on your day, but you live in the most expensive area in the country for man hours. They have to charge more because everything costs more in the south east

The welding job is a difficult one to quantify, as no idea how bad the rot is and how bad a bodge job was done before. If the previous repair, they didn't cut out the rotten metal it will be far worse than last time. Yes the panels for a 2001 ducato are available, but many other plates will need fabricating. All the previous bad work needs cutting out and replacing, so expect more than £500 per side. If it's less, that will be a bonus, but done right will extend the life of your van. Cut corners and you will be chasing rust every MOT till it can't be repaired

This is not my MH, but an example, so that I’ve drawn a yellow arrow of roughly what point under the chassis area it’s having welding done, on both side right underneath.
