We need the sun in our advanced years and so motorhome in Spain for the whole of February, March and April. My Question is, are we allowed to go to Germany for September without it affecting our ability to visit Spain next February to April inclusive? We have become so confused.

You just need a break of 90 days between the two trips which from your dates you would. After 90 days back in the UK the Schengen clock resets so you can go back for another 90 days.

You should be able to on the 90/180 rule. On a rolling basis, as I understand it, you can't spend more than 90 days in 180 in the EU.

So Feb-Apr 24 pretty much uses it up. Then by the end of August you have used up 60 days (with Feb dropping out).

Then you're in Germany in September. Every day you spend there one day in March drops out of the 180 day calculator. By the end of Sep you are therefore still in a roughly 60 days 'consumed' position (April and September).

Then by the end of October April has dropped out and you've only been in the EU for 30 days in the 180. Come the end of January you're still on 30. Then in Feb you return to the EU. Every day you spend in Feb and early March a day in September drops out of the 180 day cycle. By the time the end of April 2025 comes around you're pretty much back at the 90 days used position.

use https://www.visa-calculator.com/
1st - 30th September 2024, then 1st Feb 2025 until 30th April 2025 is ok

You can create an account to keep track of all dates in and out of EU.
Hope this helps.

Friends also confused as going back and forward a bit this year, showed them the above calculator and they were so pleased as they could spend longer with their son than they had thought.

What happened to May/June/July?
Technically at the end of July, they are clear for another 90 x days surely? 🤷‍♂️

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We also found it all very confusing until we downloaded a Schengen app on our phone.

By using the app we could see plainly what was happening with dates we had already planned to go to Spain and any possible future trips we hope to make to Portugal.

It became clear that if you go for a month or two, and then came back for a month or two, that it's virtually impossible to run out of dates for which you want to travel.

Have a good at downloading one of those apps.
They are all free.

The way I understand it is you look back at the last 180 days? You can't have spent more than 90 days.

So Feb/Mar/Apr is - call it 90 for simplicity. Then you're full. May/Jun/July happen. That's another 90 days. Over the last 180 by the end of July you were there for 90.

But you are right, in that in Aug-Oct you will drop one of your earlier days out for every one you spend in Europe, so can spend 90 days.

Although 90 days is 'permitted', you might want to plan your return to leave a couple of days in hand for emergencies (eg. Breakdown) rather than risk facing a fine or being excluded from returning for a potentially long time...
