We are squeaking

Had a squeak on ours, turned out to the rubber strip in between the rear leaf springs had disappeared, old rubber inner tube cut to size, prized the springs apart temporarily and inserted the rubber, squeak now gone, and that was 4 years ago

I’m not familiar with the callipers in question but it does sound like there is a anti vibration shim missing, especially when you say that the noise stops when first pressing the brake. As mentioned previously I would get the AA to check it again, especially when you say it is leaning. Did you pay by credit card? you maybe able to challenge them as well. I hope you get it sorted.

I suspect the front Disc brakes pads are the culprit, my 2.8 jtd sent me mad with it,
Good news it's an easy fix, clean up or renew the pads and use cooper grease on the rear of them.
No more meece noises!
Thats what my hubby said then I read out this post (knowing how much the squeak would get on his nerves)

Thank you! That sounds right and we're going to book it in pronto. Mags
May I suggest the VB heavy duty springs, not cheap but they do cure the A Class nose down! We have them and compared to my old 4250kg sonic they’re a hell of a lot more comfy and no crashing over potholes👍 The Alko premium X2 full air takes care of the rear👍

Think I’d get your springs sorted, even if they aren’t the cause of your squeal. One new and one old one fitted?

I’m sure someone more knowledgeable may say different, but I thought they are usually changed in pairs. 🤷‍♂️

Always change springs in pairs.

I’m surprised they managed to buy only one.

100% you have a sticky brake calliper that’s why is disappears when you brake, wheels off and a good clean up of the system WILL cure it and should only cost labour and no more then an hour…

Might be sticking slide pins as well.

Speaking as an engineer and mechanic…😎
As Just smiffy says If you dab the brakes and the squeak goes away it’s the brakes, BUT also try pulling the handbrake on gently a few clicks, whist you’re driving along, if it still squeaks it’s the fronts, if it stops the squeak it’s the rears.👍

Front brake pads need chamferred.

That's my guess. Probably gone shiny from overheating at some point . Usually a light sand of the face and the edges chamferred sorts the problem.

Wheel bearings tend to rumble and whine rather than squeak .

I had similar problem on 2004 Ducato. It turned out to be the handbrake brake pads.If you try gently applying the handbrakewhile moving it will probably disappear.

Assuming you haven't been invaded by mice my suspicions are either a wheel bearing on the way out or possibly a sticking brake caliper. Drive belts can squeak but if it happens after roundabouts then bearings may be most likely.
I would jack 1wheel a time front first, handbrake on ,chock other front wheel , apply foot brake hard, then let off brake your bound to get a little resistance when turning wheel , if not hard to turn , do same to other front wheel .
Problem could come when checking rear wheels , but, chock Both front wheels, do same as front wheel, if rears are not disc brakes and it's front wheel drive, apply foot brake the off, wheel should turn freely then apply handbrake on same wheel then let it off, wheel should turn freely do same to other rear wheel, ( I hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs!) With regards to wheel bearings unless you can hear a fairly loud rough noi inse when spinning wheel let a Professional look at it .

You must make sure if using lithium grease that it is an extreme high temperature variant! Or use a propriety anti-squeal compound.

Just use Cera Tec it’s made for the job 😊

Probably just something sticking somewhere to stop the shoes or pads retracting fully, probably a bit of dirt …

I've re read and there's a couple of things that stand out by omission or by context.
5) They only replaced one spring at a large national commercial garage where we were unceremoniously dumped by the AA after it went. I don't think they wanted the job and seemed unsure if the replacement is even the correct size. Our fron right end (where the spring went) is now noticeably lower than the left side. I think this sounds like the culprit - will get it checked.
The OP doesn't think they wanted the job (When I've worked at both main dealer and independents, if we were busy at times with looming deadlines due to late parts deliveries or the job extending due to a Pia bolt etc, the last thing we wanted was to add to the workload with an AA/ RAC/ National job coming in, and turned around pronto).

The cost of a pair of springs is surprisingly cheap, but the labour/ time to do the job is expensive. Garages buy a pair, fit one. Include in the bill one spring for the price of a pair, get the AA job completed and signed off. Garage gets paid.
Not nice from the customers point of view but is the way that garages/ breakdown services seem to be operating lately.
And I doubt that its the cause of a squeak as it started AFTER the MOT/ service/ work on the brakes (if I'm reading it correctly?)
The OP hasn't said they replaced the brake pads, but does say they worked on them/ would have been a failure.
Northernraider is right, brake pads need a chamfer on the leading edge but most come with that these day, but a lack of a chamfer creates bite/ no bite/ bite/ no bite, even when no load applied (brake effort) which creates squeak/ squeal. BUT, I have come across several times now, brake pads that are slightly undersize (0.3-0.6mm), that are then able to oscillate in the calliper. No amount of clips/ copper slip/ cleaning stops the squeak/ squeal. Pad replacement was the ONLY cure. Twice were top brand name aswell. It took a while to find the culprit so something for the OP to know about as a possible. A good set of pads is around the £20-30 so a cheap replacement and a quick job too.
I've avoided pads beginning in brem and fero for vans and minibuses for a few years now. And ends in bo/do.
(I am independent and have no connection to brake pad manufacturers and no interest in taking on work:sneaky:)

Our Autotrail Scout started squeaking at the rear, everything was checked but no joy.
Turned it was the axle, Don't think it had ever been greased !
Garage heated the axle up to get allthe packed hard grease out and filled with the correct grease via the 4 nipples on it.
Problem solved no more squeaks.

I had same problem one of my brake pad wasn't releasing and was in constant contact with the disc causing it to heat up and expand and obviously it got louder the hotter it got. you could have a similar problem. hope this is of ude

If you are not at all mechanically minded ignore my advise above and I suggest you don't let guesses from anyone , take it to a reputable garage, where brakes , steering, wheels are involved get it checked by a Professional, when I wrote above I did not realise how limited a knowledge you had , as I say to a Doctor was a mechanic and your skill is Medicine everybody has a skill, just some think they !!!!!!

We will book it in immediately of course but it's interesting to hear people's experiences and suggestions. I'm definitely not a mechanic ;) Mags

Good luck Mag52 and hope its inexpensive. Please let me know the solution when its sorted.
We have a 2015 Hymer B544 and recently developed an occasional rotational squeak while turning right. We first noticed this while in France during the hot weather, it is an occasional and intermittent squeak so difficult to demonstrate to a mechanic. So we would interested to know what happens. Thanks in advance.

Yes, ours started when turning right and then after going around a roundabout. Now it's pretty constant. We're booked into a local garage that has done Hymers and other motorhomes before. I'll feed back.

Just after our annual service and MOT our 2004 Hymer B774 on a Fiat 2.8 jtd started squeaking. We took it back and they checked the brakes and released some tension on the handbrake and said 'you're fine' so we went to Europe for 90 days and squeaked all the time. We're still squeaking. It is getting worse. We are thinking take it to a different garage but my worry is that it will take hours of faffing about trying to find out what the problem is with the inevitably huge bill to follow.
All we know is that it starts after going around a roundabout or turning right and it is loud enough to cause pedestrians to stare as we drive by. We had a front spring replaced earlier in the year after the old one broke and we're wondering if it could be that.
A log shot but can anyone give any advice or thoughts about this?
Mags
Could possibly be a small stone caught between the brake disc and back plate. Have you been over any recently resurfaced roads since the service?

News on this problem: It has been in a local very well thought of commercial garage. They checked all brakes and suspension and found nothing wrong. Their advice was to drive it at least once a week and reassured us it is completely safe. They thought it hadn't been driven enough - we drove 4k between March and July. Not sure what to make of that but at least we know it's safe to drive.
