Hi what does everyone think about the waterless washes ,just watched a video on YouTube with Bob earnshaw and the caravan vlogger and they seem to be very pleased with it ( dry sparkle) .

I havn't watched the video but it seems to me that if your vehicle had dust/grit on it and you dry rub it you will create scratches. I thought the thing t odd was thoroughly wet the paintwork before going near it with shampoo or foam.

I do use Autoglym rapid detailer sometimes when we are away and I want to give the van a bit of a spruce up, spray on and gently wipe off then go back again with a fresh cloth. I suppose the best way really is to leave the van mucky till home and snow foam it properly but then we have a mucky van when you are away and that doesn't sit well with me.

GJH swears by it. Well perhaps he doesn't swear exactly but you know what I mean. :giggle:

One thing it does really well, is remove the black streaks from dirt on the roof.

You should see ours atm Martin 🙈🙈 it’s an utter disgrace. Still, roof tackled today, and rest of van tomorrow 👍 can’t quite believe how bad the roof was 😬☹️

I love it but don't use it when the van is covered in mud.
Its great for fetching of fly's, cleaning grubby marks and cleaning silicone sealant

It damps the surface so it is not a case of rubbing dry grit Into the paintwork.

I haven’t used it on my motorhome but have used it regularly on the scooter we tow behind with no adverse effects at all.

i wouldn’t use it on a very muddy vehicle but for general dust and Road grime it works well.

I used it years ago, it was very good, but the dirt has to go somewhere, so it goes on the cloth. So when you're away you use a large amount of them. And it's difficult to clean them. The blurb said that the wax type medium crept between the grit and the metal or plastic, and just wiped away, so doesn't scratch. And it did seem to work that way. In my case it was metallic sprayed metal, and I never saw a scratch. But did end up with grey dust in the crevices between panels and such. Plus the extreme heats you get abroad tended to dry the contents in the spray bottle. So I didn't bother to replace the original spray. The make I used was called Dry Wash. So it's worth a go, see if it works for you.

I used OneDryWash for years on our van and found it much easier than water.
The way to stop grit damage seemed to be not to let it get too bad in the first place and to use plenty of product to lift the dirt.

I've used the various incarnations of the same product with different names from Ideal World.... Williams, Renault and it's now M sport or something.... Once it's done once it doesn't get so dirty , as in it doesn't lay on the bodywork so easy like most decent carnuba treatments do. Anyway....I washed my previous van before using it first time, even put it on a just damp van and used it 9/10 times then and wow what a shine built up. One tip.... Damp cloth to apply it.... On the current van I've not yet got around to use it yet but planning on in the spring.

I use the Meguiars stuff mentioned by Coastal Cruiser. if I ever find myself needing to clean a vehicle and no water is available.

I use the stuff mainly on cars that are on show - classic car show type thing - and the car has got grubby going down.

the art to safely using the stuff is having loads of microfibre cloths, folding the cloth into 4. Then spray the stuff onto a small area and make ONE pass with ONE surface of the cloth on ONE direction. Then turn the cloth to another unused surface and repeat. You will get through 16 microfibre cloths this way to do a small car such as a Morgan, Citroen 2 CV or Fiat 500 (new shape).

Even under harsh lights at the NEC, there was no evidence of scratching resulting from using this method after a wet and dirty motorway trip one November (Yorkshire to NEC)

Gets my vote!

My van is very dirty at the moment, covered in moss and black streaks, Cornwall still has hose pipe ban. Im so fed up with the ban Im in the process of setting up a rain water recovery system so I can use a hose legally.

I use Meguiar's Ultimate Waterless Wash and Wax when I want to get a bit of a shine on the old girl - works pretty well if you follow the instructions carefully. It's an expensive way to do things though . . . .

We use a dry wash on both cars and our motorhome, but not every time. It was developed to use on army vehicles in the desert so that tiny bits of grit is covered by the solution and does not scratch the bodywork. The wash is superior to water by a long way. It has a super shine and repels water afterwards!

After seeing a friend use it on her van with great results I’m doing mine this afternoon. I don’t have car wash facilities at home and the cost of going to the hand car wash is exorbitant.

I used it on my Fireblade motorcycle with no adverse effects but if it was really dirty I did wash it first, it did work fine for me.

I’m not really impressed with it, I bought quite a few bottles of DRYWASH at a Motorhome show as the demonstration on the bonnet of a Mini looked quite convincing, but when you think about that bonnet has been polished so many times you’d expect it to shine anyway, I’m coming to the end of the batch of bottles of DRYWASH that I bought and because I’ve had them for a few years they don’t seem to be very effective at all, I wouldn’t buy it again, though having said that ALDI sell a waterless wash from time to time so I might just try one bottle to check it out.

I agree with the comment about the demonstraters repeated use of the same bonnet, but there's no other practical method at a show. But in practice it does work, some get on with it, some not. I did, but don't bother now. Mostly because I'm not so fussy now. Just keep on camping!

I wait for it to rain if it is not too cold, with a good brush I get most of the general grime and mud off, so you dont need much water to do a more thorough clean when the weather is better.

My advice is don’t go to the Eastern European car wash at all.

They use TFR and it kills paintwork and strips any protection that might be on your vehicle.

Is there a Western European alternative? 😉

I’ve yet to come across a hand car wash run by Western Europeans in this country.

Unless of course you know different.
In which case I’d guess they use tfr so don’t use them either 😉😊

The Williams or whatever Ideal Word is pushing is brilliant, I use it on brand new & used cars regularly & it never scratches
