We will be driving down through France and Spain again on 12 March. In the past we have struggled to find water: many campsites are closed and municipal aires shut their taps till Easter for frost protection. We have sometimes asked wayside farms, who are usually helpful. Funsters suggestions?

we will be doing the same, from the 16th, but we have never had an issue getting water. Some French Aires were free up until 31st March a couple of years ago, not sure whether they still are, one on Ils de Rae and another at Les Sables d'Olonne, both of which had water available.

we wont be taking that route though, but if youre in no rush to get there and fancy Ils de Rae ... it might be an option?

Cemeteries nearly always have the taps on, CCP Aires normally have the water on.
If we don't have showers we can last about 7 days on a full tank.
What's the point in not showering, we have 2 a day whatever.

Depending on your route we've never had problems. On A20 Chateauroux has water. A10 Pont a Brac which are reachable in a couple of days . All CCP have water 365 days you can use for 5 or 6 euro

I think it was Janine who gave us the baby wipe tip for a shower replacement when water is in short supply.

As said above. CCP Aires have their water on through the winter in our experience

Have never failed to find fresh water somewhere…..though when travelling south from Calais in February this year, we did restrict ourselves to alternate day showers. Dumping grey water is always possible. As has been mentioned disposal of toilet waste is usually the limiting factor, which is why we carry a second cassette in a box in the garage. This means we can manage for a week if necessary. Having a SOG also helps with using cassettes to maximum capacity without unpleasant smells and, when emptying if needing to rinse and no water is available, we use water from the grey holding tank.

A problem with managing cassette usage can be using too much water to flush. The temptation is to use a quick burst after urinating. The snag is with wear the plastic WC bowl develops micro-scratches which hold urine and cause smells (or so I was advised when I visited the SOG factory in Germany a couple of years ago). Lenny HB mentioned in another thread that he was fitting a Twusch porcelain liner in his WC in his new Carthago MoHo. I wonder if this results in an appreciable reduction in the quantity of flush water needed?

Only time we have had a real problem was September 2021, in 2020 they turned of water on all the Aries to discourage travelling during covid but they were still off in 2021, finally found a tap on a church wall in the middle of a village.

Don't really know as we have such a powerful pump in this van but we use a spray bottle a lot of the time.

I was talking to a Climatologist the other day, and he predicted that in 25yrs time, if the world population keeps increasing, water will cost more than petrol? 🤔

I have a skin condition, consultant said it had been aggravated by too frequent showering, getting rid of all the natural oils, am limitted to 2 a week, but do wash potentially smelly areas. In really warm weather i have a cool shower, just water to refresh.

We always carry a couple of 10 litre plastic jerrycans and at least 3 x5 litre bottles of drinking water. Use a pressure spray for the loo instead of the flush( and also flush with wash water). The main tank is then used for washing showering and pot washing.
Drinking water is usually cheap to buy in France and Spain and therefore places to top up the main tank. NEVER ran out of water on out travels.

Showering generates too much steam and condensation - and takes longer.
I can shower quicker than having a proper wash using same amount of water and not having smelly wet flannels laying about. With roof vent open little or no condensation and no more than having a wash.
