Occurred to me that I probably need to do something to prevent bacteria etc in the water tank.

Quick look online brings up Puriclean - water system cleaner & water tank cleaner.

Is this the right way to go - or are there more and better options?

Puriclean - start of season dissolve several good spoonfuls in a watering can of warm water - otherwise it can clump.
Drive around the block and empty next day. Flush through. Then on each fill I add a small amount (liquid form) before filling with fresh.

Puriclean worked pretty good for me recently, we had a stale taste in the water.

Puriclean seems to have sorted out the taste.

We have also started to completely drain both fresh and grey water tanks upon return home.
We've always drained the fresh including the boiler after every trip.

We use puriclean each year. Follow instructions, dissolve right amount for tank size in WARM water, top up tank to full. Fill boiler, open taps to get stuff into pipes, then close taps! Leave overnight. Drain out and fully flush through a couple of times.

I take it you don’t use the water tank for drinking water?

Most definitely we do use the water tank for drinking water, the Puriclean does just that, we don't do the second part mentioned by Jev88.

The water in the tank now just tastes like our own tap water, where as before it tasted plastically and stale.

Used to use the Puriclean, but it doesn’t descale. Great for black spot, but I found if you followed the guidelines, i could taste the chorine in it. Easy if you can use it and rinse like crazy, but that’s not what it’s designed for, so I reduced the quantity as most would.

So now it’s food grade citric acid that cleans, descales, freshens up the tank and boiler and then run into the grey tank to do the same there. It works well for me and a number of other Funsters that now use it.

Thinking about it, I haven’t put a Puriclean tablet in for over 2 years, but use the citric acid twice a year. Be surprised how much scale it removes. After 24 hours, I also run it into the kettle and coffee machine while it’s decanting into the grey tank, and they are sparkling as well.

I've been on Elixir's website and can't find any information of levels of concentration in water. Would you mind saying what quantity you use?

Hi, I usually mix up 2kg of citric acid with warm water and fill my fresh tank up, which is around 140 litres. Make sure to use food grade and hope it helps.

Yes that's a +1 from here as well. Decanting after 3 hours and whilst still hot from the boiler into the grey waste tank and then giving that a good swoosh about by driving a couple of miles gets it into all the crevices in the grey tank, let it stand overnight, then drain off.
