I'm a bit confused. Can you hear the pump running when no taps are opened? It is normal to hear the pump whenever taps are on, but not when they're off.

The pump usually uses one of two methods to operate. There are either switches in the taps that detect the taps being turned on, or there is a pressure switch near the pump that detects the pressure dropping as water escapes from the tap. If the pump is running even without a tap being opened, it is likely that the appropriate switch or wiring is at fault.

or you have a leak somewhere.
is the boiler drain open perhaps ??

Open ALL your taps...for a minute see if it trying to prime.

The pump may run a few seconds after switching off taps...but no more

Do you mean it runs with a tap open but stops when all taps are closed.
If so that's normal.
If it continues to run with taps closed it's possibly a leak, a stuck microswitch or a lot of trapped air in the pipes.

They may be isolation taps from tank or from boiler.
You could have a pressure system and a leak in the kitchen tap will result in the pump running although that would depend on the size of the leak.

Think the red knob next to the boiler should be fully extended upwards.

Present position just dumps water from the boiler - l think !

Leak just dripping

If your pump is running permanently then you may have a leak somewhere,, your tank may be empty and pump has nothing to pressurise the system with or your system relies on micro switches in the taps and one or more has failed.
Have you turned off the valves shown in the picture and if so,, does that make a difference.

Looks as if a leaking tap is causing the pump to run continuously. Turn the pump off when not in use until the leak is fixed.

If you pull up the red knob (to the right of the boiler)....does it just fall back to it's current position ?

If so, you can (as a temporary measure) insert a clothes peg to retain it in the fully closed position. The valve with the red knob opens when the temperature drops below about 7C. This prevents water freezing in the hot water tank.

When in use, in say temperatures below 7C, the heat from the boiler keeps the dump valve closed (assuming it's already in the UP position).
