Hi newbie question here. Having moved to a PVC from a caravan with aqua roll, should the water pump be making a noise all of the time it is switched on?

No, you may be able to hear it when it’s working but that’s all, if it’s on all the time then it’s leaking somewhere allowing some air into the system.

If it is a pressure switch system, it may just need a tweak on the pressure adjusting knob/screw. It should be shown in your manual.

Our Moho is 4 years old and now and again during the evening you hear the pump for a second or two . Never caused an issue and reliably informed it’s cooling / air / etc

That used to be the signal for a leak in our Adria.

no signs of a leak in ours
Ours was behind the shower. The second was from beside the Truma oiler under the seating. I only noticed this one when it ran out from between the double floor onto the ground. The noise was just the pump running for a couple of seconds every few hours. Adria appear to have a reputation for leaks from joints.

If the pump is hard mounted it will vibrate whatever it is on. Rubber feet and foam pipe insulation near the pump or where water pipes touch body or panels

In a word, no. There are two kinds of water systems: pressure switch and tap microswitch.

In a pressure switch system, the pump runs for a few seconds, until it has built up pressure in the pipes. Then a pressure switch (usually part of the pump, or very near it) switches off the pump. The pipes should hold the pressure for several hours. When someone opens a tap, the pressure falls, the pump switches on and water flows. When the tap goes off, the pressure builds up and the pump switches off again.

The other system has a a microswitch in every tap. Moving the tap handle turns on the microswitch, which turns on the pump, and water flows. When the tap is closed, the microswitch switches off the pump.

Usually microswitch systems have a submersible pump inside the water tank, and pressure systems have a pump outside the tank, usually quite near it.

There will be a minute one letting air in. If there are no leaks the pump won't run with all the taps off.

If stationary Could you not not mark where the water level is on the water tank then turn on pump but make sure all taps are closed.
Then check levels after a few minutes. Then it will determine if it is leak or micro switches,
Also check external shower switch if you have one ?

Great explanation thanks. My water pump is inside the water tank and has a mad moment every now and again when it tries to switch itself on, then tries again two seconds later, has a twenty seconds break and then repeats the same sequence for the next twenty minutes. This can happen two or three times during the night when it wakes me up. Van is brand new.

If it’s brand new, you should inform the dealers and maybe they make efforts to pinpoint the fault.

I did it two weeks ago. Still waiting for the call back...
