Reading through PG's trips thread on having a spare pump and seeing the vast difference in pump life it got me thinking whether mine is due a failure!

I have a FLOJET 30PSI 5.3LPM. It's ten years old and apart from wiping the dust off it and looking in the strainer about once a year, finding nothing, it just sits there purring away.

What are others experiencing? Have other flojet users experienced a failure? What life do people get from other manufacturers?

I have only ever encountered a pump failure in 40 years motorhoming when I left some water in the pump over the winter. Ice popped a plastic cap and strained the external seals. I was in Spain when I discovered the leak and visited Hispavan near Vera. They had half a dozen pumps on the shelf matching mine exactly. The part cost about 80 euros plus 20 euros for fitting by an apprentice being instructed.
The pump will not stop you driving, the cost was not excessive, it was redilly available so why carry a spare?

Pressure pumps generally have a long life.. the Shurflo in my imported USRV was the original , fitted when it was built in 1995 ..

I bought it in 2005 , lived in it for 3 years .. four of us with showers every day, and a domestic automatic washing machine.. it worked hard .. sold the RV in 2010 , same pump still working fine

in my experience, it is the submersible type that fail regularly .. why I always change them to pressure systems when I buy a van or indeed caravan when it has an on board tank

I’m on my third Whale Watermaster pressure pump in 7 years. They become unstable, stop and start frequently, becoming very annoying. I think they are too sensitive to the pressure in the water system and there is no way to adjust them. I carry one of the older ones as a spare for emergencies.

I would replace with a Shurflo ..
