Hello all! House is sold (stc) and we are busy looking at vans! Exciting Times! We would like a washing machine and would be grateful for any recommendations or what to avoid.
Thanks in advance
John

Can’t see the point of carrying a washing machine!
Been fulltiming now 8 yrs, I wash ‘smalls’ & light tops by hand & rest I take to a laundrette/laverie.
Trouble with a washing machine you need a lot of water & EHU!

The major thing to consider is whether you have somewhere to store it - we have a fixed bed so it fits under there nicely. We only take it with us on trips of over 2 weeks, which unfortunately are few and far between.

I have this one

Washes well, and the spin seems better than my machine at home! Start with the cleanest stuff and work your way through to the dirtier stuff and you won't use a huge amount of water. We can run it off the inverter and by doing it on a sunny day (best for drying) the solar panel soon replaces what's been used. Alternatively, we occasionally book into a campsite (we mostly use aires) to top up battery, water etc.

I won't use launderettes as during my student / early working days I had various loads of washing completely ruined by oils and other substances left over from previous persons wash (despite checking the drum before using).

Do you want a front loading automatic or a twin tub?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a front loading one - at the moment I have a twin tub one. If you search this site you'll find lots of info on the front loaders - the newest I think is the Daewoo wall mounted one.

I find the twin tub one really useful - it washes very well and spins really dry - the only problem is that I have to use it outside (can spin inside in the garage) but would spill too much water doing a wash there. I bought this one which runs from our inverter.

Costway Mini Twin Tub Washing Machine (5KG Washing + 3KG Drying) Portable Washer Spin Dryer Compact 300W... sorry can't get the link to work

We did have an issue at a German site recently when I was told off for 'taking water' by the site owner. I pointed out that had I done my washing by hand in his washing sinks I would have used far more water than the couple of buckets full that I'd used. It wasn't very nice being challenged though and it made me think washing inside the van would alleviate the problem.

I don't like the idea of using laundrettes and you also have to wait for your things to go through the wash. I'd be there for hours as I wouldn't put coloured in with whites, etc. but that's just me. :)

We used to store and use our twin tub in the shower, makes easy emptying, and filling from the shower, they are light and easily run from a small inverter. But they need a bit of space to travel with! We often stored it in the garage when not needed for a while!!
Now that our life has changed a bit, we no longer need it.
We will have it for sale at the Thetford Bash

We also used a twin tub from inverter (only needs a small one 300w will do) in the shower as then you have the shower hose to fill and emptying just goes down the shower drain.
We actually don't carry one at present as SWMBO like to use site washing machines.
I have had a dress shirt with oil on it from a shared washing machine on a cruise last year, but the staff put it right, and ironed it nicely. Obviously a risk as you dont know what the previous person put in it.
