Hi all! We’d like to fix a box to the back of buddy for OH’s fishing bits but have no idea where to start. Do we need the horizontal bars fitted first ( seen these on a few vans) or does a bike rack do the job? We would not do this ourselves 😬 so any recommendations for fitters would be much appreciated… we are in Warwickshire.

Various options depending on how much weight/bulk you want to carry. You can go the Fiamma box route with a bike rack (they do them without the rails too I believe) to mount it on but it won't be cheap. We had a MH once where the box was fitted directly to the back (not recommended!).

An alternative might be an extension from the chassis side rails so that a rack can be slid on with a box placed on it, then when you don't need the kit you can remove the extension, box etc and go back to the original length of MH. You wouldn't need to go the whole hog of having a tow bar fitted so should work out a lot cheaper - might be worth having a chat with any local fabricators to see what they can do for you.

Before you go down this route though weight your MH fully laded (excluding fishing kit) and see what capacity you have left on the rear axle (and overall) to ensure you have enough payload left to add the kit and box, rack etc.

As you don't have the horizontal bars that most motorhome have for a cycle rack, for which you can then buy a box that fits on the cycle rack, it could all be a little work.

The downsides of the rear wall mounted rack is weight and height
The weight limit is usually around 40kg (two normal bikes)
The height may mean a small step ladder is needed

Another option worth looking into would be to fit a tow ball
(FYI - I have removable one, so it does not show when not in use)
You can then get a towball mounted cycle rack with box,
or just a tow ball mounted box, Ski boxes, like wardrobes, are also an option
Probably more expensive
But the weight limit is higher (as you can carry a motorbike this way)
The height is waist level.

Look and see what Thule have in the catalog. They have other options designed for skis but dont seem to list them for the UK market

I have always had in the past is a bike rack with the box mounted on it. More flexible as you can then put bikes on it if needed. Present motorhome doesn't need one yet as the garage still has some space in it, though swmbo is trying to fill it.

We fitted our box on to a bracket that Cliff bolted onto the two bolts of the tow bar, because he didn’t want to attach it to the van itself.

It was absolutely brilliant.

I can probably find you a better photo if you were interested, and also the details of chap that made ours. We were really pleased with it.
